"All of you," Klaus said, looking directly at me. My first instinct was to freeze in terror, to run back to New York and hide from Klaus forever. My second instinct, was to get mad.
I reached my leg out and flipped over a table, breaking the leg off and holding it to Klaus' chest. He didn't even seen fazed.
"That's not how you kill an Original," Rebekah said, taking my seat on the couch.
"Rebekah..." Klaus said warningly, a smile not on his face for the first time today.
"How do you kill an Original?" Stefan asked, an arm still around Elena.
"What, so you can kill me?" Rebekah asked, leaning back in her seat. Clearly she was enjoying this.
"What possible reason would we have to kill you?" I asked, my grip on the piece of wood loosening.
She thought about it for a moment. "Fine. What you need is-"
"Rebekah!" Klaus said angrily.
"Shut up," I told him, narrowing my eyes. "What do we need?"
"Klaus is immortal," she informed me, grinning. "But by all means stab him with the table leg. It won't kill him, but it'll definitely hurt."
I took her advice, slamming the wood into his chest. He groaned, more out of anger than pain.
"Think of this as a preview," I said. "If you ever try to hurt anyone that I care about, you'll find out first hand why Damon just called me 'Psycho-Salvatore'."
"Wow, I like it," Rebekah praised. "Did Serena get all the balls in the family?" she looked straight at Damon, who gave her his signature smirk.
"No, Serena just likes to overreact," Damon said. I turned to him, outraged.
"Overreact? You heard what he just said, right?!"
"Serena," Damon said in a patronizing voice that made me want to hit him. "Klaus wanted to get a reaction. He knows that if he tried to do anything to anyone in this town, every supernatural being in Mystic Falls would be on his ass."
"Damon, Klaus doesn't say things if he doesn't intend on doing them," I argued. Of course Klaus wanted this reaction. But he'd made it clear that killing us was his intention.
He pulled the wood out of his chest and dropped it on the floor, stained with his blood. "She's right Damon. I've made my intentions clear."
"Do you really think we're gonna let you come in here and kill us all?" Elena asked. I could sense the fear in her voice.
"Yes," he answered, as if this was completely obvious. "I've been alive for over a millennium. It would be very easy for me to take some time out of my busy schedule to murder everyone you've ever known."
"So we have to just let you use us in some sick Original Hybrid voodoo ritual?" Damon asked.
"Well you see, that's the other reason why I came here. Elena, only you and Serena are integral to the spell."
"What's your point?" I asked.
"My point is," he pointed at me and then Elena. "You two can choose the witch, vampire and werewolf."
"Oh, because there's so many of them floating around," I said with a scoff. Was he serious?
"Serena, this is happening whether you like it or not," he said. "I'm merely offering you a chance to save some of your friends. I could easily make the decision myself... what about Stefan?"
"Fucking try it," I dared him angrily. "Please, be my guest. See what happens!"
"You have 24 hours," he said. "And just so you don't try to skip town or conveniently go missing when I return tomorrow, I'll be leaving Rebekah here to watch you."
"What?!" Rebekah asked. "You lure me out here under false pretenses and then leave me here?"
"This is for the greater good," he said. "Once the ritual is complete, I'll take the daggers out of the others."
"Daggers?" I asked. "So that's how you kill an Original? With special daggers?"
Rebekah turned from me, back to Klaus. "I'll tell her Nik. I'll tell her everything."
"You wouldn't," he said nonchalantly. "That puts you in danger too. And our brothers."
She looked me up and down. "It's a risk I'm willing to take."
"Even if she knew how, what makes you think Serena would go through with it?"
"Who do you think Serena hates more right now? Me, who's done nothing to her, or the man who just threatened every supernatural being in Mystic Falls?"
Klaus thought about it.
"If you tell her anything, I'll never take the daggers out. You'll never see our brothers again, you have my word."
"You can't do that," she said uncertainly.
He smirked. "See you all in 24 hours."
And he was gone.
...
A few hours had gone by and Klaus and his ritual were still the sole topic of conversation.
"It's not like we have a lot of options," Elena said, looking at me.
"I'm not going anywhere with Klaus, not tomorrow or any other day. He needs me, without me, he can't do anything."
"And where are you planning to go?" Stefan asked.
"Why would I tell you that?" I asked. "Originals can compel vampires. When Klaus comes, he might compel you to tell him where I am. The less you know, the better."
"What about Rebekah?" Elena asked. "Isn't the whole point of her being here to stop us from running?"
I looked around. "Where is she then?" I asked. "Trust me, we are Rebekah's last priority."
"What if Klaus comes here, sees that you're gone, and kills everyone that he was planning to kill anyway? Mystic Falls isn't the only place in the world with witches, werewolves and vampires," Damon said.
We stopped. It was something that we hadn't thought of.
"He wouldn't," I said, trying to come across more confident than I felt. "Klaus wants me in the ritual more than he wants to kill everyone else. He'd come after me, but he'd leave Elena and you guys alone until he finds me, I'm sure of it."
"How sure?" Stefan asked as there was a knock on the door.
"I'll get that," I said, ignoring his question. The truth was, I didn't know Klaus. I didn't know what he'd do if we pissed him off, I didn't know what would happen if he turned up tomorrow and I wasn't here. All I knew was how determined he was to complete this ritual.
I opened the door, not sure who I expected to be on the other side. Of course, the last person in the world that I expected to see was Steve.
"Steve. What are you doing here?!" I asked. "You can't be here."
"I'm tired of not making an effort," he said. "I came to find your brothers, to see if they knew where you were. What are you doing here anyway?"
"You really shouldn't be here Steve," I said. So far, my efforts to keep him away from Mystic Falls weren't going well.
"Why not?" he asked suspiciously, narrowing his eyebrows. "Is it to do with Klaus? Are you OK? You look scared. Has he threatened you?"
"Stop talking please," I said, trying to think. "You'd better come in."
I stepped aside to let him through. When I turned, Stefan, Damon and Elena were standing in front of us.
"Who's this?" Damon asked, a look of scorn on his face.
I looked up at Steve. "This, is Klaus's leverage."
