DON'T READ THIS UNLESS YOU'VE FINISHED OATHBRINGER--TO THE END. I REFUSE TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR SPOILING YOU. READ THE STORMING BOOK OR SKIP THIS CHAPTER.
but like how does one review a monster like oathbringer. it's so big. ahhh. oh well. let's do this. big long blob stuff.
Dalinar: truth be honest, I didn't like Dalinar's first POVs for the first part of OB. they weren't what I'd thought they'd be like, and that threw me off (I think I forgot how slow the beginnings of BSandy's books are). now I would like to re-read and stuff without so much of a bias. I was also surprised at how soon Dalinar and Navani got married, but it makes sense for them to, after waiting two books. It fits well later in the book. :)
I liked the chapters with Dalinar's visions and him bringing people from across Roshar to view them. (Lift entering the visions with Dalinar or Stormfather knowing was pure gold, ha I love my child.) Dalinar's interactions with the Stormfather and how their relationship evolved was GREAT. I love those two together. :D
Dalinar's flashbacks sure were something, weren't they? (outward appearance: calm. inward reality: screaming. lots and lots of screaming.) I love how different they were from Kaladin's and Shallan's, because for them I mainly felt pain during the bad chapters or affection during the good parts. But Dalinar? Oh boy. The Blackthorn . . . I storming hate him. He was savage. He was an animal, a wild, savage beast. A monster. He was a terrible husband, an awful father, a nasty man with so many problems. It was really disturbing comparing that to current Dalinar, the good, amazing man who everyone looks up to.
Young Adolin and Young Renarin were gifts. Pure pure pure. Seeing the jerk Dalinar was to them, but them still loving him, was so painful and yet so pure. I love them so so much. <3 <3 <3
EVI KHOLIN. OH MY GOSH. I was not prepared for Chapter 76. I can't . . . I can't even. I knew Dalinar would be the reason for her death, but I did not expect the terrible terribly way it happened and I--I just CAN'T.
My favorite flashback chapters were probably the ones 76 and onward. Gavilar's funeral was a really good one. The Nightwatcher/Cultivation chapter was amazing, haha. HA HA. What Cultivation did was smart and so good and I love her.
I am so proud of Dalinar. He accepted what he did and who he was. He recognized that he was a terrible person--and then changed. THAT is the main message of this story--becoming a new person, taking those steps, fighting through the pain, taking responsibility . . . recovery, in a way.
He is no hypocrite. Not anymore.
(also is he like . . . a mini Shard now? Half a Shard? Unity kinda sounds like taking Honor's place, since he's dead. I LOVE IT.)
(btw i loved the scene of Dalinar hugging the gemstone with the trapped Thrill inside, with Lift standing by him with her hand on his shoulder. it . . . fit. so well.)
Kaladin: oh man oh man. Kaladin. Kaladeen. My son, my boy, my child. He's so strong, so amazing.
The Hearthstone chapters slaughtered me, of course. All of his interactions--with his parents, with Roshone, with Laral, with Oroden, whoo. Those were amazing. Perfect.
Kaladin adopting that group of singers like he did with Bridge Four was so great. And, like Kaladin, I have no idea which side I should be rooting for or whatever. Maybe there shouldn't be sides. And with the singers being the original occupants of Roshar? AHHHHHHHHHHHH. That had me shook.
I really liked his mini-flashbacks of when he was a spearman. Those fit very nicely, and I hope we get more of them, with Shallan and Dalinar too in the upcoming books. I'd love to learn more about Tarah.
