If we go by the whole ‘flying highest’ thing, there is a tale of an eagle claiming to fly the highest and then it is revealed that a wren hitched a ride on the eagles head and flew higher once the eagle had reached its limit.
Considering Hogwarts was founded a good few centuries ago, it is likely Rowena Ravenclaw may have heard this tale. Now that I'm thinking about it, she could of named her house after the wren because it was so intelligent to do such a thing.
