Chapter Twenty Five

Jade Caswell

"100, 200, 300, 400, 500." I counted out the twenty dollar bills and placed them in front of Chris.

"You know you don't have to do this Jade." He sighed but took the money from me anyways. He was wrong, I did have to do this. I had worked two extra shifts to give Michael the down deposit for the apartment he'd found me a long time ago, and now it was all his.

All my stuff was already in my new apartment I'd found in Downtown Miami in a small little loft. The rent was cheap, and I didn't constantly have someone threatening to take the place from me anytime I did something wrong.

The loft was gonna be my home for a little bit, until I figured out where I wanted to disappear to.

"Okay, that's everything. Here's the key." I handed Chris the two keys I'd been given when I moved in and looked around the apartment to see if I'd forgotten anything.

"He's gonna come for you Jade, you know that right?" He sighed. I just shrugged. What was he gonna do? He couldn’t drag me back, he didn’t control me.

“I don’t really care, he messed up, not me.”

“He didn’t tell you why he did it?” Chris questioned and looked at me confusedly. No, of course Michael didn’t tell me, he never told me anything.

“No, it doesn’t really matter either.”

“Are you gonna give up that easily?” He looked like he was almost disappointed in me, like I was in the wrong. What else was I supposed to do? Let him trample all over me?! He had no respect for me, and it showed in the way he treated me. Yeah I knew what I was getting into when I started messing with him, but this was crazy. He just disappeared and got married? Who really did that shit?

“Yeah Chris, I’m giving up. I can be treated better.” I shrugged and picked up my purse that I had dropped beside me on the floor while we were talking.

“Have a good day Chris, thanks for this.” I stated and walked out of the almost empty apartment. It wasn’t mine anymore, so I didn’t have to worry about what happened to it.

“He’s gonna get you back.” I heard Chris mumble as I walked through the door frame.

He wasn’t gonna get anything back, not around here.

“Girl, this shit is nice. I can see the whole city.” Lauren gasped as she walked over to the glass windows in my apartment and looked at all her surroundings. Yeah, this was a really nice apartment, especially for the price. Having Caswell as my last name helped too though.

"I know, imagine when I have it all decorated and shit." I really felt independent now. I'd paid for this apartment all by myself, no help from anyone. I was really on my grown woman shit.

"I'm so proud of you boo." Lauren cooed and wrapped her arms around me in a hug. We started to sway to an imaginary beat until there was a knock on the door.
