Yearning

Anna

It was hard not to fall asleep.

The crackle of the fire resounded in my ears, its warmth radiating throughout the room. In my hands was a piping hot mug of cocoa that's sweet scent wafted through my nostrils every time I took a breath. A soft wool blanket was wrapped around me. And of course, the strong body that I was currently using as a pillow certainly helped my drowsiness.

"I wish we can stay like this for the whole holiday season..." Chrom muttered, snuggling closer to me. "Actually, I wish we can stay like this forever."

I cracked open one eye to look at him. "Me too, dear. Me too." I took a sip of my hot cocoa; I winced as the liquid scalded my tongue. I need to give this another minute to cool. "How busy are you going to be?"

Chrom let out a hearty sigh and hugged me tightly. "Too busy. I'm so sorry, Anna, but I won't be able to spend most of the holiday with you."

My heart gave a painful twinge. "What do you mean?"

"I mean that I'm going to be kept busy with dumb meetings and visits from delegates." He buried his face in my shoulder.

I ran my hand through his dark blue locks and tried not to cry. "Why are there so many meetings planned?! Did Emmeryn ever have to go through all of this?! I remember that she was always around during the holidays last year!"

Chrom looked up at me. "That's precisely the reason why I'm so busy..." he sighed. "This is the first Nagamas I'm hosting since Emm's death... I don't have everything figured out like she did... Plus, a lot has happened in the past year. It's no surprise that things have added up. I'm so sorry, Anna. I truly am."

"Is there anything I can do to help? Anything at all?"

Chrom ran a thumb over my cheekbone. His soft touch sent a wave of warmth through my veins. "Just continue to smile and be happy my love," he requested. "I don't want to keep you from having fun during the holidays."

I placed my hand on his, my golden engagement ring shining in the firelight. "I'm going to miss you..."

He kissed my wrist. "I'll still be in the castle, my princess," he chuckled.

"I know. But these dumb nobles will be keeping you from me." I placed my mug down on the table. "Will we still be able to spend some time together?"

"Of course!" Chrom reassured me. "I'll spend whatever sliver of free time I have with you, and I promise that I'll be able to spend all day of Nagamas with you."

I smiled at him. "Ok, then."

Before I could say anything else, he leaned forward and captured my lips. I jumped slightly in shock, but relaxed into his embrace almost immediately.

"I love you so much," Chrom whispered before he kissed me again. "I wish it didn't have to be this way."

My eyes softened as he nuzzled my neck. "I know, I feel the same way." I kissed his head. "I yearn to be with you, always."

"I promise, it'll be a lot easier next year."

"Oh? How so?"

"Because I'll have the hang of this whole 'King' thing," he smiled. "And, we will be married by next year."

My heart leaped in excitement. "You promise?"

He kissed my forehead and held me tight. "I promise. Next Nagamas, I will spend every second of it with you, and you will be my wife."

I closed my eyes and smiled. "I can't wait until then."
