For years Earth had been a dying planet, however it was quite evident that soon the end was coming within the next decade earlier than four years ago. Each year since, adults and children were to take a test to see whether they would be left on Earth or would be able to re-populate on a planet named Columbus. This year, Silver was going to take the test. She knew she was smart enough.
When it was time to sign up for the test, Silver happily filled out the form and submitted it. As soon as she submitted it, she was given a notice.
Most people's notice would come within twenty-four hours of the submission date, and it would contain where the person would be taking the test and when they would be taking the test. Silver's notice was different, however.
Dear Ms. Silver Hart,
Your medical history shows that you have been given robotics after a freak accident eight years ago. These robotics include a microchip that not only relays what your mechanical eye sees to the brain, but also allows you to access the Internet.
Due to this, you are not permitted to take the test. We do not doubt your intellect, but to be sure your answers are indeed your own we have prohibited your taking of the test.
Good day,
Test Management.
Silver read this message several times, not wanting to believe that this was true. It was impossible! Wasn't there some way they could block an Internet signal from her and give her a pencil and paper test opposed to a digital test?
Oh how Silver wanted to provide her own solutions, but she knew it would come to no avail. What was the point in arguing with the people who started the tests? The situation seemed hopeless.
A second notice appeared.
Hey! You're Silver Hart, correct? My name is Ally Minium. I can get you to Columbus should you wish. Normally I'd charge, but since you're special I decided against it. So? What do you say?
Silver blinked and stared at the message. This Ally Minium would be able to get her to Columbus? And what did she mean by special?
How did you find me?
It's simple enough. Just had to track down your individual signal. Most people it's with their phones, but you. Yours is actually yourself. I haven't dealt with someone like us before.
Like us?
Yup. You didn't think you were the only cyborg, right? We're all over the place. You're just the first one I've had to track down.
The idea seemed preposterous. There were more cyborgs? So she wasn't the only person who wasn't able to take the test. This Ally Minium must be taking cyborgs to Columbus, then.
Alright Ally. I'm in.
Excellent! I'll get you after school tomorrow. You should now me when you see me. If not, you can always ask Ms. Goldstein.
What did Ms. Goldstein have to do with anything? Was she a cyborg too?
One question out of many: will you explain what's going on?
Not yet, but eventually.
