I cross the road, tightening the straps on my backpack.
"Jonathan!"
He looks over his shoulder, saying something to his friends before stopping and waiting for me.
"Hello, Abigail. How was your day so far?"
"Good. I missed you at lunch today."
"I'm sorry. I forgot to inform you that I was to be attending a study group during lunch."
"It's okay. I was actually wondering if you would be my partner in a little contest."
"What does this contest entail?"
"Cuddling for a few hours."
He shakes his head, still as serious as ever.
"I don't like wasting my precious time on foolish little contests."
"But the prize is ten thousand dollars."
He pauses, his hands on my shoulders.
"I'm sorry, Abigail."
"But it's ten thousand dol-"
He waves his hand in front of my face, frustrated.
"I said no. I don't want to hear another word about this foolish contest out of your mouth."
I don't hide my disappointment. Jonathan's facial muscles relax.
"I didn't mean to snap at you, Abigail. I'm not having a good day today."
"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that."
He give me a weak smile.
"Thank you for understanding. I will message you later."
"Okay. I'll message you later."
