I sat behind the front desk of my work place with my pre-owned iPad out.
I was slowly mimicking the sign language.
"You're doing it wrong," I heard someone say.
I looked up to see a man wearing a purple hoodie with jeans standing on the other side of the counter.
'I sorry, I not good at foreign sign,'.
He grinned at me, "I'm good with a lot of sign, I'm mostly deaf,". He tilted his head so I could see his hearing aid.
I tapped my throat.
"Mute?" He asked.
I nodded my head.
The man looked around the store, "Anything about physics, machinery, or chemistry?"
I nodded my head, we had plenty.
I got up, leaving the iPad on the table, and walked into the science section.
I motioned to the sections with the topics he needed.
"Have you read any of these?" He asked.
I nodded.
"Which do you think are the most informative?"
I bit my lip, thinking for a moment before crouching and picking out a few of each.
I handed them for him to inspect.
"Would you mind if I looked through these?"
I motioned for him to go ahead before going back to my desk.
I sat back down on my stool when a regular came in a few minutes later, "Heya Speedy," she greeted.
I waved to her as she went to the fiction section.
The man walked back over with one of each book I'd suggested. "Speedy?" He asked as he put the books on the counter.
Cat peered over the shelf at us, "He stacks books and organizes them really fast, like inhumanly fast," she clarified.
I shrugged my shoulders, rolling my eyes at her while I rang up the man's books.
He payed with cash and walked out.
