(Rosies POV)
"Took you long enough." I said as I emerged from behind some trees with some twigs and wood pieces I scavenged around the area for our fire later. Jake was sat on a rock holding the tube that filled the air pump to our mattress. And yes I did say 'our.' To be a "effective camp", it's easier to bring one mattress our teacher said. Luckily it was required to bring our own sleeping bag, since you know... the whole no pda thing was enforced by our teacher. Not really, but he liked to think so.
"Well what took you long enough. All you managed to find were squirrel scraps?" He shot back.
"Haha, what the heck are squirrel scraps?" I asked confused.
"Oh Rosie, so juvenile." He rolled his eyes and plugged the mattress, stopping from any air to escape. He got up, and grabbed some burgers that our teacher had dropped off for us.
"Haven't you been to juvy?" I shot back, he flinched a little and I immediately regretted it. Why did I say that.
"Just because my friends have been, doesn't mean that I have been. Gosh Rosie, I thought you were smarter than to make assumptions." He boldly stated and didn't look at me. He busied himself with opening the burgers from their packaging with a large pocket knife from the pocket of his army pants.
I rolled my eyes and turned around to drop the fire wood into the pit so he could see the shame in my face. But I refused to be made felt like that by a popular who thinks he has it all. Seriously, does he think every girl loves him? Because I sure don't.
I lit a match from my pocket and crumpled some newspaper we brought as I bent down. Once the fire was a success, in less than a minute, I turned back around. But startled, I almost fell back into the fire behind me when I knocked into Jake... again. Deja-vu or what? But before I fell closer, I felt strong warm hands grip my hips and instantly I was lifted by him away from the fire.
"You really should be more careful." He said, grinning and almost laughing.
"You're the one to speak Jake. You scared me half to death." I said, still a bit startled and also very very aware of his hands that were still on my hips. My heart was beating much faster now.
"Well I was getting ready to put the burgers on." He said. He noticed me looking at his hands and then slowly dragged them off me to comb his hair.
Weird. "Okay well don't burn them." I said precociously. I stepped around him.
"You really don't have a lot of faith in me do you Evans?" He said.
"Actually, neither do you. Actions speak louder than words. Lets see what you got this week Pratt." I challenged.
