Chapter VI

Serenity

"Everybody up!" Someone shouts, disturbing my peaceful slumber.

I squint my eyes and see Tris, Four, and other Dauntless holding flashlights. They are fully clothed in their normal attire. Everyone groans obviously irritated.

"You have exactly ten minutes to dress and meet us at the tracks! Understood?" Our reply is a mixture of murmurs and more groans. Once they leave, I shove the covers off my body and swiftly pull my clothes on. I redo my ponytail, making it neater than what it was.

"What could we possibly be doing this late?" Amy groans, lacing her boots.

"You can never tell with Dauntles." I shake my head and shrug my shoulders. She laughs.

"Me, so tired." Isaac says in a soft, wavering voice. He rocks back and forth on the balls of his feet. He could collapse at any minute.

Destiny thumps him on the head and he scowls at her. Those two are a hoot.

We arrive at the tracks a little after the Dauntless-born. Kat notices a box labeled PAINTBALLS and shows it to us.

"Well, this is gonna be fun." I grin, staring at the colorful balls.

"Everyone grab a gun," Tris orders. We are the first to obtain our supplies since we were closest to them. I sling the gun over my shoulder and shove a box of paintballs into my pocket.

Minutes later the light from the train casts and everyone quickly climbs upon it. We sit towards the back and no one speaks as Four and Tris begin our instructions.

"We'll divide into two teams to play capture the flag. Each team will have an even members of transfers and Dauntless-born. One team will exit the train first and go hide their flag and the second team will do the same." Tris explains.

"Take this seriously as this is a Dauntless tradition." Four adds sternly.

"If we win, what do we get?" Tyler asks. Great. More dumb questions.

"You get to win. That's it." Four replies flatly, raising his eyebrow.

"Now, let's divide up," Tris declares, her eyes wandering over each initiate.

"Ladies first." Four smirks, causing Tris to grin and blood rush to her cheeks.

She clears her throat and says, "Serenity."

I'm taken aback at the sound of my name on her tongue. I mean, I did lie to her yesterday and I'm nearly certain she was aware of it.

Four: "Kevin."

Tris: "Kat."

Four:"Isaac." I start twiddling my thumbs.

Tris:"Destiny."

Four: "Aiden."

Tris: "Amy."

Four: "Mike."

Tris: "Allison."

I search for Allison and find her sitting beside Tyler. She holds her head up with her hand and stares at the floor. Her natural red hair envelopes her. Her eyes meet mine and I smile. She smiles back.

When all of the transfer initiates have been selected, the Dauntless-born are picked next.

Afterward our instructors decide that Tris's team will exit the train. My team stands and begin leaping off the train into the night. I watch Tris land on her feet. I nearly do the same, but I end up stumbling--attempting to regain my balance.
