        Chapter II

        Serenity

My eyes fling open and I'm in the testing room once again. My palms are sweaty so I wipe them on my pants. Beads of sweat collect on my forehead and my breaths are tremulous. I remove my electrodes and clumsily climb out of the chair to steady myself. Christina just stares at me, gobsmacked. She removes her electrode and wipes her hand across her face and positions it over her mouth.

"I can't believe it." She whispers, making the gap between her eyebrows smaller. Dark eyes large and vacant gazing deep, if possible into my soul.

"What do you mean? W-what was my result?" I stammer upon my words as my rapid heartbeat dominates my body.

"Amity," She exhales and removes her hand. "And Abnegation, and Dauntless." Her voice lowers to the point where I can barely register her words.

Three results? Is that even possible?

"There must be a mistake." My eyebrows furrow and I pinch the bridge of my nose, closing my eyes, stabilizing my frame. I open them while she grabs my wrist and hauls me to a corner, near the machine.

"It's not a mistake, its just extremely rare. Listen, Serenity you can't tell anyone about your results, not even your family. You can't trust a single soul." She says.

"What are you talking about? What am I?"

"Your results were inconclusive meaning you're Divergent. A person who learns to conquer the simulations and their fears. You can't be classified into just one trait so you receive multiple results. People like you pose a threat to the society and the leaders don't take those things lightly." She clarifies swiftly, her words mending together. Every now and then her eyes shift to the door as if someone could possibly burst in on us.

"Your result is Amity since that's what I entered into the system. At the Choosing Ceremony, it's all up to you and your conscience how you want to spend your future." She gently pushes me toward the exit even though I plead for her to stop.

"Don't tell anyone." She whispers again, before slamming the door in my face.

Lots of unanswered questions, swim around in my brain, but the only thing I yearn for at the moment is rest. I don't see Amy in the hallway so I figure she is waiting in the cafeteria. Divergent. The word I've heard a few times but never truly comprehended. Amy sits at the same table where we originally sat only Lily and Harmony are not there. Half the cafeteria is empty except for three Candor boys. Amy bites her lip vigorously while her leg bounces hard. The rules state that I cannot ask Amy about her test and she cannot ask about mine.

"H-Hey." is all she says as she stands up and greets me with a hug. Her skin is paler than usual and she's vaguely frigid. I detect the unease in her voice and immediately feel compassion towards her. The test must have had a certain effect on her. I hold her hand in mine and restore warmth within her even though I'm not feeling so hot myself. We steadily return to the train platform, whilst neither of us producing a sound besides our ragged breathing.

Choosing Day is not just an agonizing day for the eligible students, but for the parents it brings back vivid memories of their choices and can be bittersweet. Amy and I link arms to support each other as we walk the streets alongside our parents towards The Hub which long before was the Sears Tower. Each of the factions walk in their faction groups, all eyes glued to the street. I feel a twinge of guilt in my chest as I remember how difficult it was for me to conceal such an important secret from my family. Christina's words penetrate my thoughts. Don't tell anyone. You can't trust a single soul. I make a mental note to investigate more information on Divergence. If I'm apparently dangerous to the society, I at least want to know the reason why.
