When Dean sent Cas to your house, he felt nervous. Being a human was new to him. He wasn't sure who he could trust besides the Winchesters. Even though Dean said he trusted you with his life, Castiel wasn't sure it would be the same for him. What if you didn't want him in your home either?
Castiel was greeted with a hug when you opened the door. He was reminded of your caring and gentle manner when you quickly brought him inside. He almost didn't know how to react to your kindness.
"I was told to expect you Castiel," you smiled, leading him down the hall. "The bathroom is down here, and your room is right next to the bathroom." You turned around to face the angel. "There should be a fresh change of clothes in your room. I'll get out of your way so you can get settled in. I don't want to overwhelm you."
"[Y/N] you don't have to do this," Castiel mumbled, looking into your eyes. "Everywhere I go..." Castiel's words trailed off as he let out a long sigh.
You rested your hand on his shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze. "I don't mind you staying here Cas," you reassured him. "I'm just sorry there's nothing I can do about your grace. However, I'm willing to help you in any way I can. If that means giving you a place to stay, then so be it." You tapped his arm, offering a kind smile. "Now go get washed up."
Castiel did as you asked him to. He was a fan of showers. As an angel, he had never experienced the relaxing effect that showers had on his body. Castiel liked how loose his muscles felt after the shower. He even liked the clothes you had picked out for him. They were surprisingly comfortable.
As the angel walked into the kitchen, he noticed that you were having trouble reaching the higher shelf in your cupboards. He padded up to you, reaching over you and grabbing the two glasses you were trying to retrieve.
"What are you making for dinner," Castiel asked, handing you the glasses. "Is there anything I can do to help?"
"Thanks," you smiled, setting them on the table behind you. "I figured we would try something simple. I'm not sure what you like and don't like. How do grilled cheeses sound?"
"I'm not sure what those are," Castiel admitted, a somber look on his face. "Perhaps you can teach me how to grill these cheeses?"
"Well you don't actually- you know what I'll just show you." You gathered the things you needed for a grilled cheese, waving Cas over to you. "Watch what I do so that you can do it too." You handed Castiel a butter knife, offering an encouraging smile. "The first step is to butter your bread on one side only."
After Castiel watched you, he did the same. His buttered bread looked a little worse than yours, but he was confident in his abilities. "Is this adequate [Y/N]?" Castiel glanced over at you, trying to gauge your reaction.
"That's great," you praised. "Now the next part requires patience. Watch what I do again, okay?" Once Cas nodded, you put your grilled cheese into the skillet and turned on the burner. After five minutes of patience and listening to the sounds the pan made, you took your grilled cheese out of the pan and put it on a plate. "Ta-da!!"
Castiel took the piece you offered him and he hummed in satisfaction. "This is delicious. Not what I was expecting, but delicious," Castiel mumbled. "Do you mind if I try?"
"That was the idea," you chuckled. You handed him the spatula. "Just make sure you listen to the sounds coming from the pan. They'll tell you when it's ready to flip." You heard your phone ringing in the other room. "I'll be right back. I have faith in you Cas."
Once you were done with your phone call, you noticed that the air looked a little smoky. You were only gone for a little over five minutes. You stepped into the kitchen, waving the smoke away from the alarm. You were surprised that the alarm wasn't going off.
"I'm sorry [Y/N]," Castiel apologized immediately. You could hear the guilt in his voice. "I suppose your faith in me was wrongfully placed."
"It's okay Cas," you assured the angel. You opened a window and turned on the ceiling fan. "I didn't expect you to get it right on the first try. I sure as hell didn't. I burned my first grilled cheese, too. Dean was patient with me. I can be just as patient, if not more."
"I don't know if I should try again," Castiel murmured. "I might burn it again."
"You might," you stated, raising your eyebrows. "Or you might do a better job. To be fair I did have to answer my phone. I should have been in here to tell you what to listen for. So how about I just throw this in the alley, where some dog will eat it, and we can try again?"
A feeble smile found its way onto Castiel's face. "Sure," he nodded. "Perhaps I can redeem myself."
After another few tries, Castiel managed to make a nearly perfect grilled cheese. You weren't expecting Cas to hug you tightly after he had succeeded. You didn't decline the hug, but it was a little unexpected.
"Would you mind teaching me how to cook other things [Y/N]," Castiel requested, a glint of new confidence in his expression.
"One step at a time Cas." You handed him his grilled cheese. "Bon appetit."
Cas couldn't wait to learn how to cook more things. Even if he didn't get it right, he knew he was in good hands.
