Noelle's POV

"Mom," I groan miserably, rubbing my forehead in frustration.

No response.

She always ignores me, it's frustrating. Scowling in annoyance, I huff and start sorting the numerous job applications littering my desk.

"Okay, there are six choices," I mumble to myself, trying to just make the stupid decision. "Waitress. Office. Zookeeper. Saleswoman at Walmart. Bartender. And helping Mrs. Lorenzo with the bakery."

I set the bartender job aside, since I haven't even sipped a alcoholic beverage in all my seventeen years. Next, I set aside the Walmart job, because that is simply a last resort.

"If worst comes to worst, I could always become a pole dancer," I mutter absent mindedly, "I'm not half bad at dancing."

"But then again," I reason with myself, "I barely have enough confidence to wear short shorts."

Disappointedly, I sigh, "If only I could sing. If I became rich that way, I would have zero problems."

"Too bad you are horrible at singing."

I jump in surprise, falling off my chair and into a heap on the floor.

My little brother, Nathaniel, laughs heartily from my bedroom doorway. "That was priceless!"

Rolling my eyes, I can't help but chuckle at my clumsiness as well. "Get lost, Nate!"

Unashamedly, he lifts his hands in surrender, still grinning. "Hey, I just came to tell you that Dad wants you to come find him."

"M'kay," I chirp, pulling myself up from the floor.

As he leaves, I gather my remaining applications and follow him.

"Go away," growls Safran, sending me a bitter look over her shoulder.

Blushing, I quickly turn away from my friend and her boyfriend, Kyle.

She acts like this sometimes, like she doesn't have time for me anymore. I've gotten used to it.

Over the summer, she didn't once text me. I gave her her space and figured we'd become friends again today, on the first day of school. Apparently not.

Weaving through the thick throng of students to my locker, I slide my backpack off my shoulder and enter the locker combination.

"WHAT THE HELL?!"

Genuinely thinking that someone is talking to me, I whirl around in shock. But I can't see who yelled. There is a huge crowd of students gathering together, around something.

I step closer, trying to see over their shoulders. Cursed short legs!

Suddenly, I'm shoved forward, into the thick crowd. I get sucked in and jostled around roughly until I'm in front.

I trip and fall on the floor. Embarrassed, I look up and gasp. Two guys are fighting. And not friendly wrestling, like I've seen boys do. But serious, 'I-want-to-kill-you' kind of fighting.

I get to my feet quickly and take a few steps back, trying to fade back into the crowd. But they just keep pushing me away. Entirely unsure of myself, I watch the fight with a wince on my face.

One guy is quite tall, from what I can see anyways. He has red hair and pale skin. He is quite muscular, but not compared to the other guy.

The other one looks way taller than the first, and three times as muscular. He has dark brown curls and an olive skin tone. And even I can tell that he is beating the first guy to pulp.
