Falling. I was falling. Rapidly. I had drove my car off a cliff moments before all because my mother was sitting next to me. Wait. My mother?! I look over in the passenger seat and see my mom smiling. She was smiling at me while we were falling to our deaths. She was always smiling."KAL!" My mother screamed as my jeep door was ripped off the hinges and my mother grasped onto my hand for dear life. "KAL HELP ME!" I quickly unbuckled my seat belt as rapidly as possible and tugged on her favorite, brown, wool sweater as hard as I could tug. "KAL!" She screamed as her sweater ripped slowly. "KAL! Please help!"
"KAL!" I jumped out of my seat and quickly realized I was back in my classroom, as i was 10 minutes before falling asleep and drooling all over my math homework. As I scan the room I find everyone's eyes pointing in the same direction. At me.
I wipe the drool from the corner of my mouth and await my death from Mr. Parks impatiently. "Ms. Vast, this is the third time you've fallen asleep in my class this week." He says, as if i'll actually listen and take into consideration that I should get more sleep the night before. "I know. I know. I just haven't gotten enough sleep is all."
He nods his head while walking slowly over to his desk. He opens his top right drawer and pulls out a purple slip. I roll my eyes in annoyance as I quickly came to the conclusion I was receiving my fourth detention this week.
"One more, Kalila." He says with a determined voice. "I understand sir." The rules in our school are very similar as to the ones you have. No running in the halls. No foul language. No this. No that. One rule, however, stands out. Every week, each teacher gets a new stack of purple slips. Detention slips that is. If any student in any class gets five or more in one week, they're suspended.
You're probably thinking, why in hell do I care? I'd get to miss a day of school right? No. My life isn't as simple as everyone seems to think it is.
For my father, school is the most important thing you'll ever get the privilege to attend in your life. I attend a high class, very expensive, private school. Not because I wanted to. Or because the education here is any better than public school. All because we can simply afford it.
My mind wandered back to the nightmare I had just a few minutes ago, and I still can't figure out why she won't just leave me alone. It's like she's trying to tell me something but the dreams always end before she gets to it. It's more than her needing help. It's more than me missing her. It's straight up confusion.
After the bell rang, I was out the door faster than the speed of light. Relief came over me as i soon discovered it was lunch hour. Finally. I went to my locker to get my lunch and it wouldn't unlock. "What the hell?" I muttered in confusion. I tried again. And again.
"Need some help, Sleepy Head?" A boy about 6'2, with Jet black hair, and the bluest eyes i'd ever seen approached me. "I'm good, thanks." I rolled my eyes. "Here I thought I'd do a good deed by helping the pretty lady get her locker open." He leaned against the locker to the right of mine and smirked slightly. "And here I thought, I could get through a day in this hell hole without being complimented by the schools douche-bag. I guess we both thought wrong hm?" I smiled innocently, picked my bag up off the floor, and walked away.
As I trotted down the front stairs of Cherry Hill High School, I could feel the presence of another being behind me. I walked down almost all of the stairs before saying, "Did that insult not bruise your ego enough? Or do you need another?" I whip around and to my expectations there he was.
"I'll take another if you're willing to dish, you're hot when you're angry." He chuckled a bit before smiling that egotistical smile of his. "I'm Jax."
"Jax Clayton."
