Benny was promoted to Sargent the morning Uncle died. I tried to understand, Everyone gasped and gossiped about the news, Rumors spread like fire cooking up bread. The days were getting colder as all this was muttered under a scarf. Some weren't as lucky.

'Apparently it was in his will'

'I think it was minor countenance'

They all mumbled as he walked by day and night From eating our rations of pepped and buttered corn and plain bread Benny could now leave I teared up at the thought of comforting our aunt as she sobbed at the thought of her husband dead. My tears froze and burned my cheeks I wiped them away with the sleeve of my tattered coat riddled with holes and tears and threads. I quickly ran to his can

I slowly approached him drinking rum I smiled to seem like I was alright.

I hated being emotional "Yo-u can leave now-" He looked up confused Im screwed.

"What are you talking about" He said gentaly smiling I choaked on my spit breathing heavily

"Your aunt," Ephensing the 'Aunt' "Dont you want to leave, Comfort her.."

"Shes dead."

I felt as if i got shot the shock overcame me my eyes widened at the thought "Wh-at"

He laughed drunkely and grabbed my shoulder swinging back and forthing laughing

"Im only joking James!!"

I nodded- "Righ-t, Right"

"Oh why so emotional" He belched inbetween his words his breat smelled of rum and cake

I shook my head and kept quiet

"Go see cathey" He knew He knew He Knew He knew it was me I could tell. He gulped suddenly sobering up

"I never told you my aunts named" He hissed

"oh- Yeah yeah you did earlier"

He shook his head

"No i didnt"

He grabbed my collor and shoved me up agains the wall a nail pointed into my back I squirmed

"Answer me" He shouted moisture from his drunken spit spat onto my face

I shook my head I kicked him

I kicked him

I kicked him in the thigh with my heel he grunted and backed off

"Sergant Benjerman!, What is this?!" A commanding voice boomed behide him My vision was going black dark spots crouded my vision He realesed me just like that

"Si-r" He stuttered Coughing Belching

"Benny wait!" I shouted weakly as i was on my knees getting splinters from the wood, He whipped around and glared at me I felt weak, Ive never felt so weak. There sat the father. The Fucking Father. I quickly scrambled to my feet to salute him only to fall again I felt hopeless.

"Im sorry si-"

"Sit" He mummbled I answered and obeyed- 'The only thing I knew'

He left to go after benny People gathered around me it stank,

"Are you okay"

"How do you know his aunt"

They repeated questions I never answered.
