** picture of the tunnels.. Sorta
Awkward silence lingered after Ray introduced himself to Carter and Shelijiah. It seemed as if Ray and Carter were having some sort of staring contest, must be a guy thing.
"Ha! You blinked!" I exaggerately waved my hand in front of their faces. "Let's talk, like civilised people." I beamed.
Carter turned his gaze to me," I'm sure you would know since," he paused."You grew up isolated with no form of civilization whatsoever so naturally I would go to you to enlighten me on etiquettes I have no need it desire to perfect."
I glared daggers at Carter as a blush crept upwards.
One point for Carter. Cha-chiing, my inner voice sang.
Oh so you're awake now, how delightful.
"If I may so kindly ask, have you forgotten my sincere plan of transforming you into a roasted human marshmallow?" I gritted out the words but my voice was sickly sweet.
"I've simply chosen to ignore this passive aggresive fire pit tradition you are itching to execute on poor victims like myself," Carter regarded cooly.
I opened my mouth to saysomething back when appeals of laughter rang through the square. I looked to my right and saw Ray clinching his stomach. I frowned in irritation, mostly at Carter though.
"A-are they always like this?" he took a deep breath to calm himself.
Yes. Breath while you can.
Shelijiah, whose been quiet during this entire time has instead chosen to study us. Or judge, if I was being honest.
Carter opened his mouth, but I beat him to it.
"You mean consantly questioning that knucklehead's mental capacity? Then you're not the only one. "
"I'm positive he meant waiting for something intelligent to come out of your mouth," Carter snorted.
"It's kind of sad watching you try and fit your entire vocabulary in one sentence, Carter," I smirked.
"How long did it take you to come up with that?"
"Not as long as it took that thought to cross your mind. Must have been a long and lonely journey."
"S-stop! As long as I would love to continue watching you guys destroy each other egos--" Ray let out a little chortle, then attempted a more neutral face. "There's some sort of super evolved creatures that are trying to breach the walls. Now, if you guys want to get out you better hurry the doors are closing. "
Shelijiah cut in," I'm already on it." she started jogging north of the city and we followed. The horses were left behind and we grabbed our bags. "As I was saying, the only exit I could get a hold of is in the tunnel transportation and I can't hold it off long or they would notice the loop hole I created. "
We quickened our pace. "Here Ivy," Shelijiah passed me the halosphere. I think you'll need it."
"Thank you, auntie. You've saved my butt once again." Carter cleared his throat.
She smiled wryly.
I turned my attention to the mention of the super-evolved creatures. It was new information. As far as I've heard and seen, the science experiments of the creatures was a failure. Their DNA is much more complex then humans. Even their red blood cells have an entire different antigen tag on them then humans...*flashback 4 years ago*
"I don't follow lieutenant," dads gruff voice traveled down the hall of the cabin. I slowly crept along the cold floorboards to the kitchen where the light and voices were coming from.
"They are very close, the scientists. from what I've heard, They have found a way around the complex tags of the creatures. They discovered traces of human DNA and our antigens in there's blood. It seems as if they adapted and evolved, mixing the genes. they are really just complex, evolved humans," the other man urged in a hoarsh whisper.
I got on all fours and crept along the rest of the way towards the small kitchen. One floor board creaked under me. I froze.
The voices stopped as my heart pounded in my ears. The air stilled. I squeezed my eyes shut, my posture still as a statue.
The whispers resumed at an even lower decibel.
I pushed myself into the shadows of the hall and into a crouching position instead.
"But you told me these are just another rumor whispered from ear to ear," I reconized my dad's voice.
"They were. Until one of the creatures escaped from the afoermatory. Apparently they are brain washing these creatures and one somehow managed to get away. Poor creature really, scars all across its body and burnt scalp. But they do heal fast. Seems as they are on some sort of drug's the scientists inject into their bloodstream," the other man, lieutenant said in a low voice. I took my chances and peered through the doorway at the table that was located in the far end of the room. The lieutenant sitting across from my dad, looked roughly 35 with hooded eyes and bushy eyebrows under the harsh lighting. A hooked nose, strong jaw, and buzcut completed his features. He obviously was of more muscline build. Quickly I ducked back into the safety of the shadows.
"And you tell me you've got that information from rumors?" my dad's voice was nuetral, but I know him. It was a threat.
"Well, yes- and no. I did some sleuthing myself." I heard the scraping of chairs.
" let me make this clear, just because I dont have authority in the army doesn't mean I dont on my property. They think they can fool me as easily as they fooled you. It's sad to see you go against your commander or I'll even go as far as to say, friend. But you were always a man after your own heart, you've never cared about the victims, am I right Mitch?" my dad's voice send a shiver down my spine as my breath caught in my throat.
"You can't change anything, They will find you," He spat out.
Dad let out a humorless bark. "And they will never find you, they can consider this a...warning. No one to tell the tale, how inconvenient." I inched backwards along the wall. I could hardly recognize the cold, ruthless man in front of me.
"You've been helpful, Mitch. Thank you for your service." the statement was a mockery. Something heavy hit the ground and then the clammer of metal on the floor. I gasped and instantly covered my mouth with my hands to keep myself from screaming. I fled to the safety of my bedroom as silent tears and sobs racked my body. That night I fell into a dreamless sleep, exausted with fatigue.*End of flashback**
"Ivy!" Carter snaped his fingers in front of me. Get your hands off the halosphere and put it in your bag. I blinked in confusion, then quickly scrambled to put it away. I looked around, we were standing at the outskirts of Eljirkin, right in front of a huge dark tunnel. *Code Red* was flashing on every transparent screen in the city. Carter handed me an array of beautifully carved daggers. I strapped it into my waist and slipped one with a green emerald into my boots.
"We are running out of time. Ivy, Carter and Ray it was a pleasure seeing and meeting each of you. But I'm afraid I cannot help you beyond the city walls. I'm assuming you will meet some of the evolved creatures. I don't know much about them since they were made in armesiia and i strongly dislike the project, but I do know, they all rely on their regent the one in the middle of their group. They are brainwashed as a collective, so if you kill their regent you kill them all. Now, Go! And Good luck Gaurdian." Shelijiah offered a grim smile.
I lit fireballs in my palms, and together we entered the dark abyss with readiness to conquer it, or whatever is in it.******* *********
