After taking my afternoon run and showering, I plop down in front of the TV and watch a few episodes of Criminal Minds to pass the time. Jacob is out with Eric and Mason doing God-knows-what. My parents are on a small getaway for their anniversary, so I have the house all to myself. It's not like I'm gonna do anything though. I'm a very boring person, especially in the summer.
After about five episodes, my eyelids start to get droopy. I don't feel like going up to my room so I make myself comfortable on the sofa. The fan in the room blows gently across my face as I slowly fall asleep.
That night I dream I'm outside at the park. Everything has a hazy sort of glow. Almost as if there is a thin film of fog over my vision.
I don't know where I am going even though my feet are moving. The grass is wet under my feet but I don't care. The warm wind blows strands of my hair back.
I arrive at the children's playground. There are a couple of slides, some swings, and a merry-go-round. I just sort of stand there taking it all in.
All of a sudden, an unspeakable feeling, almost like a rush of power, slowly flows through my body, and I'm breathing deeply to contain it. The swings move back and forward, getting higher each time. The park lamps are flickering on and off. The merry-go-round is spinning around with no one on it. I can feel the hair on my arms and the back of my neck stand on end. Out of the corner of my eye, I see someone trying to get my attention.
"Y/N! You need to stop!"
I ignore the voice and tilt my head up to the night sky. I feel powerful, exhilarated. Never have I ever felt a dream this realistic. I don't want it to stop, so I pay no attention to the voice.
One of the lights burns out. I close my eyes and stretch my arms beside me. The wind wraps around my body.
"You need to stop Y/N, please. You don't know how to control it yet!"
I turn and face Harry with a euphoric, and slightly crazy, grin on my face. "How can I stop when it feels so good?" I take a small step toward him. "Can't you feel the power just crackle in the air around us?" My eyes flutter close and I let out a breathy sigh. "It's amazing."
Harry nods and walks to me. "Yes, but we've been through this before time and time again this week. You need to learn when to let go and reign it in."
I look at him in confusion and drop my arms back to my sides. "What do you mean 'this week'? We haven't seen each other in over three weeks."
His eyes are watering from the wind and he puts his hand up to shield them. "Look, I'll explain everything in just a second. We need to get you home. Just please stop showing off your power."
"I-I don't know how."
He gives me and encouraging smile. "Yes, you do. Take a deep breath and imagine yourself reigning in the power you put out. It'll feel like a rush of cold water moving through your body."
I do as I'm told and the swings stop swinging, the merry-go-round stops spinning, even the light faintly flickers back on.
The smile of satisfaction fades from my face, though, when I remember the last time we saw each other. Even though this is a dream, the feelings are still fresh and present.
He walks up until he's standing about a couple feet away from me. "Let's head back to your house, shall we darling? I'll explain everything on the way."
Everything on the block is quiet as we head down the street.
"Your power is getting stronger much quicker than I anticipated. I think we might need to work on your self-control more," he says.
I roll my eyes. "This is just a dream, Harry. None of this is real. Including you," I gesture to him.
He stays quiet for a couple of seconds, biting his lip. He seems to make up his mind and says, "Look, I'll just get straight to the point...again." He steps in front of me. "You're not really in a dream, you're sleepwalking. Although, this is the first time you've gone out of your room. We've been working on your powers for the past week and a half, and I've gotta say I like the improvement," he smirks.
"If we are, then how do I not-"
"Remember?" Harry finishes. He shrugs. "I haven't told you what my power is. I can sort of enter people's minds and also suppress their memories."
I look at him skeptically. "So you erase memories and use mind control? Is that what you've been doing to me?" I gasp.
He roughly shakes his head. "No! I just store your memories somewhere in your subconscious. I don't have the ability to read minds or control you."
I must still look confused because he chuckles.
"It's all very complicated. The procedure made our powers fairly specific." He moves closer to me and places his fingertips on my temples. "Let me show you."
Suddenly, there's a burst of color and light, causing me to gasp. Memories pour through my mind. Of me accidentally using my powers one day and calling Harry. Harry trying to get me to focus. Harry encouraging me. My first time moving the swings and the merry-go-round. All of them bombard me until Harry drops his hands and I gasp again.
I blink away the remnants and stare at him in shock. "You've been erasing my memories this whole time!"
"Suppressing," he corrects, then shrugs and starts walking away. "It was for your own good," he says nonchalantly.
I catch up to him. "You can't just decide that for me," I say angrily as I walk beside him.
"I can if I know what's best for you."
"You don't know what's best for me. You don't know anything."
Harry smiles and just shrugs again. He is really starting to piss me off.
"How can you act so casual?" I demand. "And how are you here with me?"
"This isn't the first time you've said that," he laughs. "And I'm not physically here. I enter your mind when you sleep. That's when it's more open for you."
I grimace. "The way you say it sounds violating."
"Think of it however you like. The point is that I'm helping you. You're similar to me."
We arrive at my door step. My car is back so that means so is my brother.
"Does this mean I'll see you to tomorrow?" I ask somewhat hopeful. Being without him for this long has been killing me. I crave for his kisses and companionship.
Harry looks at me with sadness in his eyes. "I don't know yet. But you're not going to remember this tomorrow morning."
"Wait, what?" I ask alarmed.
I'm too slow to stop his fingers from going to my temples.
"Go back to bed. Forget this ever happened," he says regretfully. My vision goes black.
