Threatening Promise

I fumble over Harry's lap to the passenger seat and jump out of the car as he slowly gets out.

My mouth opens and closes, trying to figure out a way to diffuse the tension. I can feel my cheeks redden. "Um...hi Jacob," I mumble.

He doesn't say anything, just walks over to me and grabs my upper arm. "Excuse us for a second, Harry."

Harry nods, his face is full of mortification.

Meanwhile, Jacob pulls me off to the side. "Are you freaking kidding me, Y/N!" he asks in disbelief. "Do you think I like finding you in that position? I think I'm mentally scarred for life. Seriously."

I drop my head and stare intently at my shoes. What is more mortifying than getting caught making out with your boyfriend by your older brother?

"Look I don't mind that you guys are together or whatever, but what would have happened if dad was the one who caught you guys, huh?"

My head snaps up and my eyes widen.

Jacob gives me a tight smile. "Yeah, I didn't think you want that to happen."

"He would make us break up for sure," I say. I don't think I can take another break up. "I'm sorry Jacob this won't happen again. I can't be so careless, but it wasn't on purpose, honestly. It's just that one thing led to another and-"

He grimaces and covers his ears. "I don't need any details please!"

"Sorry," I say sheepishly.

"Go inside. I'm going to talk to Harry."

I look over to where Harry is standing. He is staring at us over the hood of his car, but quickly averts his eyes.

"Okay," I reply hesitantly. "But be nice. Please."

He nods and walks to Harry. I cast him an apologetic expression over Jacob's shoulder. He gives me a smile small and I head inside.

I quickly scan my room to make sure I'm alone. There doesn't seem to be anything missing. I walk over to close the window, double-checking that it's locked. When I turn back, I see a crumpled note on my bed. I must have not seen it when I laid on it. I pick it up slowly, as if any second it'll catch fire. My heart drops to the pit of my stomach as I read it.

You can't protect everyone, not even Jacob or Harry. Meet me at the park before 8 tonight ALONE. Go to your brother's room.

I rush over and fling Jacob's door open. My hand flies to my mouth as I turn a full circle around the room. There are pictures of me, Harry, Jacob, my parents, and even some of Eric and Mason covering the entire room. On his bed, his desk, and every inch of the walls.

Tears spring to my eyes. How did they even get here? I thought Harry said they wouldn't dare come in.

There's another note taped to his window. I wipe my eyes and read it.

There is no place that you can hide. Don't tell anyone or else pray that you're strong enough to protect them. I'll be waiting for you.

I crumple the notes in my hand and drop them on the floor. I dig my fingers in my hair. What the hell do I do? I look out the window to the driveway.

Jacob and Harry are still talking. I have enough time to sneak out before they come inside and notice I left. By that time, hopefully I'll be long gone. But what if it's a trap? Something could happen to me and they wouldn't know what. I check the time. Less than fifteen minutes till eight.

I bite my lip so hard I taste blood. I need to go. Now!

I tiptoe downstairs. My mother is still in the kitchen. She won't see me going out the back door. That's good. I don't want anyone seeing me and asking questions.

I hear Jacob and Harry opening the front door so I run out the back. I make sure they don't see me and soon enough I'm jumping over the fence, fleeing through the night.

On my way over, I keep thinking I see shadows out of the corner of my eyes. Twice I almost trip over my own feet for being too paranoid.

When I get to the park, I realize I have no idea who exactly I am meeting or if they have any powers at all. The thought that they might be more powerful than me scares me.

I see someone up ahead under the park light and come to a halt. It's a tall guy with a dark jacket and blue jeans. As I get closer, I study him as quickly as I can. His hair looks brown and is somewhat straight under the light. He actually doesn't seem to be much older than me. As I continue studying him, I have an odd feeling that he looks familiar.

When I step in front of him, I see a smirk on his face. "Y/N, it's nice to finally meet you."

I cross my arms to keep them from shaking. My voice is surprisingly calm when I say, "Who are you and what do you want?"

He moves in closer and I take a step back. "I just want to talk."

"There's nothing to talk about just leave me, my family and Harry alone. We have done nothing."

His eyes harden when I mention Harry's name. "You know what? I'm just going to cut to the chase. I can't stand all your talking. I'm here to offer you a deal on behalf of the organization that is tracking you down."

"More like hunting us down." I quickly glance towards the big boulder behind him. I have a chance to bash it on his head if I don't make a sound.

He rolls his eyes. "Semantics. Anyways, we would like you to join us. You have great potential to be extremely powerful with your gift. If you do, we'll leave your family and your 'precious' Harry alone."

I scoff. "Gift? It's more of a curse. I can barely control it. I get furious more easily and I lose myself."

"They will help you harness it and ground yourself just like they did to me."

My eyes narrow. I see the boulder move forward. Keep him talking. "What's your power?"

He shrugs. "You'll see in time. So what is it going to be? Us or him?"

I pretend to think about it and focus all of my power on the rock. It comes shooting at the guy's head, but at the last second, he disappears.

I duck and try to maneuver around the rock, but it clips me in the shoulder. I fall back onto the sidewalk. "Oomph!"

"Wrong choice," I hear him say.

I jump on my feet and spin around, trying to look for him. My heart races when I realize I'm not in the park anymore. I'm in an endless, white room. I press my hand against my shoulder. There's a bit of blood.

"Do you really want to know what my power is, Y/N? I'm an illusionist. I manipulate my surroundings to make them look however I want them to look."

"So your kind of like Harry," I say to the empty space.

"No!" he yells. "I am not like my fucking, pathetic brother!"

I gasp. Wait, what?
