6. I Promise You

Ashutosh was driving the car speedily. He was angry. Very angry. He could not believe that a father could think and say such a thing. He knew that the society  thought the same but hearing all this from someone was infuriating him. His anger was increasing every minute and so was the  car's speed.

Shefali said in a scared voice, "Ashutosh, please drive slowly. Please."

Shefali's voice broke his chain of thoughts. He lowered the car speed. Soon they reached the Chauhan house. Ashutosh parked the car. He got down the car and rushed into the house. Shefali followed him. 

Inside the house, they were questioned by Ayushi, "Bhaiya, you came back so early?"

Ashutosh did not answer her and started pacing around the hall. Ayushi looked at Shefali and raised an eyebrow. Shefali shook her head as she did not know how to tell her the truth. 

Baldev and Asha had come out of their rooms and were getting irritated with their son's actions. Finally, Baldev spoke, "Ashutosh, come here." Ashutosh moved towards his parents and Shefali and Ayushi followed him. He asked his son and daughter-in-law, "Why are you both back so early? You were supposed to have your lunch with Brijesh." Shefali lowered her eyes while Ashutosh's anger was increasing thinking about his in-laws' behaviour. 

Baldev looked at both of them and understood that something wrong has happened. "What has happened?" he asked.

Ashutosh spoke angrily, "He thinks I own her. How can he talk like this. My wife is not my property. She is not anyone's property." He pulls Shefali towards himself and holds her by her waist. "You are not my property. You are an individual. Do not listen to all that rubbish. If I ever try to dictate you, scold me."

Shefali asked him, "Ain't you already doing that?" Asha and Ayushi start laughing while Baldev tries to control his smile. Ashutosh looks at everyone and stomps off to his room. Baldev said to Shefali, "Ashutosh is right. You are not anyone's property, child. I know your family has always believed in all this but from now on you will not think of those baseless traditions."

Asha pats Shefali's head and sends her to the room with lunch.

Ashutosh's Room

Shefali entered the room to find Ashutosh standing in the balcony. She kept the tray on the table and went out to him. She said, "I know you are angry. But you cannot change someone's thinking. So don't stress yourself for that. Please come and have lunch."

Ashutosh listened to her and turned around. He followed her to the room and they sat down for lunch. As they finished eating, Ashutosh informed her, "We will leave for Bangalore in the evening. Pack you bags." Shefali nods.

Ashutosh thought "I can see that something is troubling you. I cannot force you to share. I promise you, I will be your Prince Charming. The man of your dreams. I will change people's thinking. You will soon forget all your pains. I will be your friend, your companion. I promise you."
