The rest of my day went just like any other, boring. I had no friends in my classes, so I was alone, until lunch.
As soon as I walk into the lunchroom, the smell of burning garbage reaches my nose. It was bad. And I thought my old lunchroom was gross. That was a feild of dasies compared to this.
"Lilly!" The unmistakable voice of Henry calls out to me across the lunchroom. He is waving to me from the lunch line.
I hesitate to go over. He is standing with McKenzie. Would she try to make a scene, like she did earlier? Ignoringthe doubt in my mind, I walk over.
"Oh, um, hey Henry!" He smiles. Which makes me smile. I hold my smile longer than he does. I hope he doesn't notice.
"Lilly! Have you met McKenzie?" He said, gesturing to the rat with hair extentions.
"Yeah. We have a class together."
"Oh Henry," Mckenzie turns him around to face her, "Will you hold my hand, it's getting cold." She slips his hand into his. However, he pulls his hand away.
"Uh, no. Just put on some gloves." He turns to face me again, "How has your first day been?"
How has my day been? Awful. Should I tell him about McKenzie? I glance at her, and almost as if she was reading my mind, she starts glaring daggers at me.
"Yes, Liz. Tell us" McKenzie says, putting her arm around Henry.
"Uh, fine. A little boring though." I hope my cover is believable.
"Ah, well, that's pretty much how it goes here"
As we go through the lunch line, my stomach fills with dread, not sloppy joe. Is this what it'll always be like? McKenzie acting defensive for no reason, then making me not tell Henry. If so, this is going to be a long lunch.
