My alarm was ringing in my ears the next day when I woke up. I hopped in the shower and got my hair clean. By the time I had dried my hair and done my little bit of makeup, my dad was knocking on my door.
"Yes?" I called as I searched my room for a clean shirt.
"You getting ready for school?" he asked from the other side of the door.
"Yes dad." I said, pulling on an Aerosmith shirt and buttoning up my jeans. I walked out of my room and was on my way out the door before my dad reminded me that I needed shoes. I shoved my feet into some black Vans and kissed my dad on the cheek. Adam met me halfway to school and ruffled my hair a little.
"Aren't you all dolled up?" He smirked from his side of the walkway.
"So what if I am?" I teased him. He tickled me and I jumped.
"It was just a question, no need to act so offended." He laughed when I almost fell into a bush because he tickled me. I never responded because I was too busy beating him in our race to school. I walked in the door a little breathless, but beaming. He caught me in the hall on the way to music, since he had been late to first and had to sit with Myburgh. "I wasn't kidding. You really are very pretty today." He slid an arm around my shoulders and we breezed into Mr. Carter's class. These days, music class was all about preparing for the Freshman Talent Night. Adam was probably the only one in the class who wasn't nervous. He had a natural presence on stage and he seemed so comfortable when he was up there with all the shining lights.
Mr. Carter had a few acts lined up when we got there, so he called Adam and I to his office and by the time the bell rang, we had the whole show planned out. It wouldn't have been fair to say that Adam and I were Carter's favorites because the man didn't really have favorite anythings; not even a favorite band, but he always said we were the only kids in that class that took music seriously. And who knows, maybe we were, but for us there was not an option where we weren't doing music. The whole town was based on musicians like my dad or artists like my mom. Yet there were so many kids that wanted to go somewhere else.
Adam escorted me to lunch and even bought me a sandwich because I'd forgotten to grab mine on the way out of the house. We ate and talked about the talent night and the lull in conversation was never awkward, but comfortable. At one point, I looked over and Adam was quietly chewing and looking very deep in thought.
"Yes?" I said, turning his face towards mine.
"Have you thought anymore about England?" He asked, suddenly serious.
"I mean, they do have a great music scene over there." I joked, trying to restore the mood. Adam just rolled his eyes and stared at me, waiting for a real answer. "No. I try not to think about it actually. I love my dad, but it's hard only seeing my mom for a week or two in the summer, you know?" Adam sighed deeply and smiled at me. Of course he knew what it was like to wish for a real mother, since his was never around. "Sorry," I said, bowing my head. He nodded and turned back to his food.
"You want to maybe do something tonight? Like go see a movie or something?" He was crumpling up his lunch trash.
"Yeah, of course. I'm up for whatever." I grabbed his trash and threw it in the bin two tables away.
"AND SHE SCORES!" Adam half-screamed in my ear.
"YES SHE KNOWS!" I screamed back. That had him laughing really hard even though we were getting weird looks from Victoria and her table of men. He walked me to my next class which probably made him late since his class was all the way on the other side of the school, but he had insisted, and who was I to say no to Adam Levine?
He met me at the doors to the school and lifted my bookbag off my shoulders. The walk home was full of talk of music and new albums and what we thought'd we do if we were ever in a popular band.
By the time we had actually walked to my house, Adam had created an all Saprano band and was swimming in money. We snacked on cookies that our housekeeper had left on the counter and tallked about homework. I did my best to keep Adam on track and he did his best to keep me distracted. Once all of that business was done I called my dad to let him know that I would be going to the movies with Adam and get permission to get money for food. After securing the appropriate funds we walked to the closest movie theater to catch the late afternoon showing of Some Kind of Wonderful.
I was very impressed with Adam for sitting all the way through the movie, but since I was paying for dinner, I was pretty sure that he had stayed more for the free food than for me or because he just loved me that much. We ate dinner at a little restaurant in the strip and then walked up to Cole's place. He made time for us and sat on the counter while we talked and listened to Adam's idea for an all saprano band, which Cole thought was a wonderful idea. He always said that male bands needed a little more diverisity and stood by the fact that glam rock was the best era of rock and roll.
On the way home, I kept complaining that my feet hurt from all the walking so Adam let me jump on his back and he carried me the rest of the way up the hill. I invited him inside and we worked on our song for the talent night all the way through once or twice. His mother called him home when darkness had settled all over our town.
After a hot shower and dental hygenie, I changed into pajamas and slipped into bed, the butterflies in my stomach doing flips because tomorrow I'd have to tell Adam and then get on stage and sing. Tomorrow could change everything.
