Washington slammed his fist on the counter and shouted, "What do you mean you dared him to go into the woods?!" Alex flinched, his eyes filling.up with more tears. He was in his dad's office, and his friends were outside the door.

Alex stammered out, "It was just a little joke!! We made a sort of doggy door he could go through but th-then it, um, it wouldnt open back up!!" Washington rubbed his eyes.

"That's why the monster didn't take the offering..." He took a deep breath and spoke quietly, "Alexander, you... you sent that poor boy to his death." Alex covered his face and nodded a little. Washington sat at his desk. He continued, "Tell your friends to stay quiet. This is going to be a secret we take to our graves. You're grounded. Go home, Alexander." Alex put his hood up and ran home.

Of course, when the friends heard the whole conversation, they went to Alexander's house and snuck in. Lafayette stole some bread. John immediately hugged Alex tightly, and the other began sobbing.

Alex sobbed, "We- We have to stay quiet about this! Nobody snitch!" The others nodded.

Hercules asked, "Should I make tea? You know what, I'm gonna get us some treats from the bakery." Hercules stood up and left. Lafayette hugged Alex as well. He was starting to sniffle as well.

John was already crying, just very quiet about it. "So," he mumbled, "Do we know for sure that..." Alexander nodded.

"James is... gone." Alex admitted, "My dad said-"

Laf interrupted, "We listened in, Alexander. He sounded very angry, we were worried he might hurt you." Alex rolled his eyes.

"My dad wouldn't do that again. He knows better." Alex sniffed. Lafayette nodded.

He sighed and explained, "Well, we just get scared. The last time he got angry and he hit you... you weren't very okie dokie for awhile, Alex. Remember? We-"

"Stop please." Alex mumbled, "I don't wanna talk about that right now." John nodded a bit. He kissed Alexander's hand, gently squeezing it. He kissed each knuckle. Alexander's face went red and he muttered, "Stop it, dork."

John continued to pepper his hand and wrist with kisses. Lafayette giggled, "I'm gonna go find Hercules so I can get some love of my own." He then left, leaving Alex and John alone.

Washington walked outside and went up to the village gates. He looked at the tall trees and the darkness surrounding and inside of it. He frowned. "James," he whispered. George felt a shock go up his neck, and he quickly went back to his office. The woods got darker.
