i felt a light tap on my shoulder, the bright and early sunrise shining into my eyes.

"hey, wake up y/n. it's time to help father round up the cattle to be milked."
i sat up and wiped my eyes thoroughly.
"oh, hey bud. would you and father like me to make any breakfast?"
"no, it's okay. father made toast, because he knows you are very overwhelmed with moving here."
"my, well that's very kind of him."

i finished up my piece of toast and put some boots on, then headed out back to start on milking for the day.

what a beautiful day it was, the feeling of fall melting into winter just made my heart fill with excitement and joy. i listened to the songbirds chirp their songs as i milked the cows, and i was soon finished.

my father had come down to the barn house to check up on me.

"hey there, honey. how's everything going so far?" he said.

"pretty splendid, indeed. the cool air is very soothing, and i am very excited to roll around in the snow this winter",  i exclaimed.

we started towards the house.

"well, since you're so excited, maybe i should spill the great news!"

i stopped in the middle of my tracks.
"...good news?"

"yes of course. i know you've been dreaming of having friends and people to associate with, and i'm aware you've been longing for an education.. a public one."

my stomach rose to my chest as i hugged him tightly.

"why thank you so much father!! i had never dreamt of this day!"

"of course, darling. anything for my daughter. also, i have one more thing to tell you.."

"and what is that, father?"

"i have some neighbors i'd like you to meet."
