When I see them, I feel myself smile from ear to ear. All three of them give me giant hugs.
"So how was the rest of you guys summer?" I start off with.
"Mine was great! I was able to go to a summer dance intensive with the New York City Ballet. It was so amazing! I can't wait to graduate so I can audition for their dance company." Caroline replies with.
"Well I was able to intern at a hospital this summer. I got to do different rotations of the different departments. So far my favorite is pediatrics and general surgery." Replied Matthew, "You're still going to apply to Vanderbilt with me, right Abbie?"
"Of course! I wouldn't want to go to medical school with anyone else. So, what did you do over the summer Zac?"
"You know the usual. Football, family vacation, college visits, more football."
Before I could say anything more, Matthew spoke up once more, "So what have you done this summer Abbie?
"Well, not much, I researched a few internships for this summer before we go to college and toured a few schools. Oh, also I got my spleen removed this summer, thanks for visiting me in the hospital."
"I didn't know you had surgery, Matthew and I would have totally visited you!"
"Why did you end up getting your spleen removed?" Zac says.
"It wasn't a very big deal, Katie and I were in my tree house, and I slipped and fell to the ground about 6 feet and ended up passing out because of some internal bleeding. The cool part was I got to inject myself with the stuff that makes you fall asleep."
"Cool!" Matthew said.
"You guys are such nerds" Caroline says with a chuckle.
Before I could say anything more, the bell rang for school to start. We all parted and made our way to our classes. I didn't get the chance to catch up with any of my friends until later in the day during 7th period Anatomy, which thankfully Matthew and Zac were in.
"Okay class, welcome back for another great school year. I know its the only first day and I know all you seniors are already looking forward to graduation, but this class isn't going to be some class that you can slack off in. No senior slide here," Mrs. Holland says with a chuckle, "Now everyone, open your textbook to page 10".
Fortunately for me, Zac and Matthew sat on either side of me. As we continued with class and started to go over what we would be learning for the year, I glance over at Matthew and think to myself, "how did he get so tan over the summer while working at a hospital? I wonder if he got to watch any surgeries?".
If you can't tell, I have a slight crush on Matthew. Though I know that this can't happen since he is one of my best friends and I am afraid that this will ruin our friendship, especially if we get into the same college and medical school. As I'm daydreaming, I hear Mrs. Holland starts to say something about the different labs that we'll be doing this year, "So class, don't forget to buy a box of latex gloves. We'll be using them when we do dissections as well as other various labs throughout the year."
Then the bell rings and we all exit class.
