Chapter 7

I wait for Matthew and Zac to gather their things before I ask, "So what do you think we'll get to dissect this year?"

"Well if you were paying attention then you would have heard Mrs. Holland say that we will get to dissect a fetal pig," Matthew says with a chuckle.

"I swear Abbie, I don't know how you can daydream more in class then anyone else I know and still make an A at the end of the year," Zac says.

"Maybe it just means I'm a better student then you," I say taunting Zac.

"Hardy harr harr. We'll see who's laughing when I start surpassing you in grades at midterms" He replies back with a smile, "See you guys later, I gotta get to practice."

Directing my attention to Matthew I say, "So tell me all about this internship! Did you get to see any surgeries? What was the coolest thing you got to do? Also, how are you so much tanner then me when I literally spent the entire summer outside?"

"Maybe you're just pale" He says with a chuckle, "But seriously this internship was one of the coolest things I've done and it was way more than just shadowing a doctor for a month. Abbie, I got to learn actual surgical techniques and basic medical procedures.

"Wait What?! That's so cool! What kind of stuff did you learn?"

"I learned basic surgical sutures and knots, how to start an IV, draw blood, perform a spinal tap," He said as he was ticking everything off on his fingers, "Oh and at the end we got to watch a live surgery. I can't wait to be a surgeon."

"You do realize that we're about to be in school for the next 8 years," I say with a chuckle, "And are you telling me that you could insert an IV in me because you're such a big hotshot now?"

"Yea I totally could insert an IV in your arm. Get me a kit and I'll do it right now."

"If you manage to procure all the necessary tools to put an IV in, I'll let you practice on me."

A week later

The school bell just finished ringing and I was walking to my car, headed home when Matthew comes running up to me.

"Okay Abbie, so you know how last week you said I could put an IV in you if I came up with everything?"

"Yea," I replied uneasily.

"Well I told my sister that and it took a little begging but she came home with all the necessary things to do it. So, what do you say, wanna be my lab rat?"

Crap! I had completely forgotten that his sister was a nurse at Saint Thomas Hospital. I just said that because I didn't think that he would actually follow through. I paused before I replied to Matthew, "Honestly I didn't even think you would be able to pull this off but a deals a deal. When do you wanna do it?"

"Is tonight good with you? Kelly would only bring me the stuff and let me try if she supervised me doing it."

So here I was, nearly twenty minutes later at Matthewshouse, getting ready to be inserted with an IV.
