Ever since I was little, I've wanted to be a doctor. Most little kids when asked what they wanted to be when they grew up said things like princess or teacher but, when asked I said, "I want to be a kid's doctor." Most teachers just brushed it off with 'that's nice' or 'well work hard'. But my parents kept the dream alive by buying me a kiddie doctor kit when I was seven years old. I remember one Christmas I got a doctor lab coat that had a name tag that said Dr. Abigail Ryans M.D. and a plastic, kids "surgical cart". That cart had everything from a stethoscope to shots to blood pressure and heart monitor.
As I got older and entered middle school I got more interested in the thought of being a doctor. When career day came my eighth-grade year, a doctor came to speak to us and while everyone else thought it was sleep inducing, I was just eating it all up. I even went up to the speaker afterwards and asked, "What's it like to be a doctor?"
He replied with, "Well, it's a very rewarding career. But it's also a lot of hard work. You need work hard and have a good basic understanding of science and math."
Then he walked away and I never saw him again, but he was the one that sparked me to do the best I could in all my classes and take try to take Advanced Placement and Honors classes in high school.
A few summers later, right before starting my senior year of high school, I was in my backyard with my friend Katie. We were getting ready to have our last end of summer sleepover and I was headed up the stairs into my old tree house to grab something. Being the klutz that I am, I missed where I was supposed to step thus propelling me towards the ground about 8-10 feet up. Instead of landing on my butt, I landed on my stomach.
"Oh my god Abbie are you okay!" Katie asks running over to me panicked.
"Yea just help me up," I say through gritted teeth.
As Katie slowly helps me stand on my feet, all the pain that I was feeling in my side engulfs me as all the blood rushes to my head and a few seconds later all I see is darkness.
Moments later I open my eyes and slowly sit up. It isn't until Katie comes rushing over to me that my mother finally notices that I have awaken.
"Oh honey! You're awake!" She says to me and then continues to speak into the phone, "She just became conscious again. Yes, yes she suffered a serious blow to the stomach.... She was only unconscious for a minute or two. Pain? I don't know I'll ask her." She turns back towards me and asks, "Honey are you feeling any pain anywhere?"
"Yes," I gritted my teeth saying, "When I tried to sit up just now my stomach felt like it was catching on fire but just in the left side though. It really hurts and I'm still kind of dizzy."
"Okay," my mom said then went back to the phone.
She said a couple more things into the phone, hung up, then looked at me once more with a serious look in her eyes, "Well, after you fell and passed out, I called 911. After hearing what happened they advised me to take you to the Emergency Room. But, instead though after hearing how bad your pain was and where it's located they're sending an ambulance."
"What? I don't need an ambulance. I'm fine. See?" I said as I tried to sit up again. Immense pain overtook me once more and I faded back into the black.
