"I'm not letting you leave."
"Baby, you gotta."
It had been like this for about an hour already. Seth had been trying to leave for the Cullen house since around lunch—some sort of pre-battle ritual, of some sort—but in a sudden change of heart, Y/N refused to let him out of the house.
Well, it wasn't really sudden. She'd been devising a plan to keep him out of the fight since she first heard about it, but she hadn't really come up with anything solid. So, she improvised, and was now sat in his lap, legs around his waist, arms around his neck.
"You can't leave me," she whispered, holding him tightly against her. "I refuse to allow it."
Seth knew this was coming. He knew Y/N was bothered by him going off to fight, and he knew she was trying to play it cool. But he also knew his baby better than anyone else; he knew it was gonna take some convincing.
"What am I supposed to do, huh? Abandon my brothers? Leave Leah alone? You know I can't," he murmured, rubbing his hand up and down her back. "I know you're a bit upset—"
"A lot upset," she corrected, and Seth couldn't help but smile. "you're leaving me so you can risk your life and kill vampires."
"Yeah, but I'll come back," he said, lips brushing against the top of her head, her damp cheek resting on his shoulder. "You know I will."
Pulling away only slightly, Y/N looked up at Seth with wet lashes and doe eyes, and he groaned. "Lie down," he sighed, and Y/N sniffled, scrambling off his lap and flopping down face first onto his bed. "You're such a baby, y'know that?"
"Mhm," Y/N hummed, content as Seth lowered himself down next to her, slipping a warm hand up the back of her shirt and dragging her closer to him. "And that's why you love me."
Y/N knew that he'd have to leave eventually. And she knew that she had to let him. Because no matter how much she wanted him to stay with her, where it was safe, she knew he'd be upset, and she couldn't abuse her power as an imprint like that.
So she'd stayed quiet, letting Seth's fingers gently work through her hair, his other hand holding her tightly against him. She was curled against his chest, head nestled in the crook of his neck and shoulder. She periodically pressed her lips to his collarbone, his neck, his shoulders— any exposed skin that was available to her, she was kissing.
"You're really gonna miss me, huh?" Seth joked, and Y/N didn't say anything, only shifted her position so that she was on top of him, folding herself onto his chest, lips attaching themselves to his neck. "You know, you're really making this hard."
"Good," she murmured, lips traveling up his jaw before pressing against his own. "That was my intent. Gotta make my mark in case a newborn vampire falls hopelessly in love with you."
Seth's eyes narrowed playfully, and Y/N didn't even have a moment to blink before she was being flipped over, her back hitting the mattress. She expected to look up at Seth and see a playful fire in his eyes, but when she met his gaze she saw seriousness and a deep concern.
"I'm gonna come back to you, okay? If it's the last thing I do, I'm coming back home."

Y/N was curled up next to Emily on the infamous Black couch when they heard the shouting.
It was a split-second moment where the two of them spared each other a single look before launching themselves off the couch and out of Billy's house, squinting in the dark to find the source of shouting that inevitably came from their pack.
Her heart stopped in her chest as she saw them, coming towards the house huddled together. Emily sagged against Y/N as they made out a body resting on top of their shoulders. Someone had gotten hurt.
Please don't be Seth.
The sudden, fleeting thought left her feeling horribly guilty, but as the pack neared, and the cussing intensified, Y/N prayed to whatever god there was that it wasn't Seth hoisted up on his brother's shoulders.
Y/N could see Leah at the front, her eyes wet with unshed tears as she held up the body on her shoulders, her teeth gritting with the effort to remain stone-faced.
"Oh, my god," Y/N said, her breath passing through her lips in shallow, ragged gasps, feeling as though her lungs were collapsing in on themselves. "No, no—,"
Emily was gripping her arm tightly, but Y/N couldn't bring herself to feel the pain. Her heart was hammering against her ribcage, stuttering dangerously with fear.
"Who is it?" Emily asked as they neared, but tears were swimming in Y/N eyes and all she could see or feel or think was pain.
And then they were in the house, and Y/N could hear yelling. Items knocked to the ground as they cleared the table, laying the body against the wooden top. As Y/N lurched forward to get a better look, she felt a pair of arms wrap around her at the same time she realized that the body on the table was slightly too big to be Seth's.
Tilting her head back, Y/N looked up to see Seth's grim face staring straight ahead at the table where Jacob's body lay, a harmony of broken sobs and screams of anguish coming from his mouth and filling the air. Seth tightened his arms around her, and rested his forehead on the top of her head, his breathing shallow as he fought off a wave of tears.
Turning in his arms, Y/N wrapped her arms around his midsection and held him tightly, his lips pressing to her hair as he reciprocated the touch. He was soft and warm and alive, and Y/N never wanted to let him go ever again. As long as he was nestled in her arms he would be safe, and vice versa.
"I came back home," he whispered, low enough that only Y/N could hear. "I promised you I would, and I did. But at what cost?"
"This isn't your fault," Y/N soothed, her own voice shaky and frightened. "I promise it's not. It's nobody's fault."
Sighing, Seth slipped a hand under her chin and tilted her head up. "I love you." The words fell from his lips like an oath, and Y/N could detect the unspoken promise in them.
Never again, said the promise. I'll never make you worry like this again, because I love you.
But Y/N already knew that was a promise he couldn't keep, so she shut her eyes and nestled further into his arms, listening to Jacob's screams and wondering how long it would be until Seth took his place.
