Edgeworth and Kay were sitting quietly in Edgeworth's office. Edgeworth doing papers like he usually was doing, and Kay on the couch playing with her gloves. Obviously, she was getting bored. Anyone would think that working with an attorney was going to have excitement at every corner, but turns out, that wasn't the case. Kay let out a long, loud sigh and Edgeworth looked up from his work.

"Something wrong?" He asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Working with you is just so boring sometimes! Why can't we work on cases all the time!"

"Working on cases all the time? Surely you would understand that if we did, we would be stressed and tired beyond belief."

"I know, but it's much better than just sitting around in your office watching you do work!" Edgeworth brought a hand to his chin in thought.

"I've got a little idea.. Why don't we play some chess?"

"You always beat me though."

"It's much better than sitting around watching me do work, isn't it?" Edgeworth smiled. Kay sighed and brought a chair over to his desk, and Edgeworth took his chessboard out. "Black or White?"

"Black. Because in the depths of night, when no other bird dares to take flight, o-"

"We get it." He chuckled and set up Kay's pieces on her side of the board. "You ready?"

"For sure!" Edgeworth smiled and made his first move. His middle pawn, forward by two. Kay made her first move as well. Third to last pawn on her right forward by two. They kept taking turns making their moves. Edgeworth had a strategy in mind of course. Kay, on the other hand was just making moves not really knowing what she was doing at all.

"What are you doing?" Edgeworth asked.

"Isn't it obvious?"

"You're not following any kind of strategy I've ever heard of."

"That's because I don't follow strategies." Kay retorted as she crossed her arms. Edgeworth made another move.

"That's not good. I keep telling you that you need to have some kind of strategy."

"Well yeah, but I don't know any strategies!"

"You must observe me play." Edgeworth took a pawn.

"I don't have time for that. I only have the time to think about how I'm going to beat you."

"If you're thinking about how to beat me, how come you're not thinking of any strategies?" Edgeworth took another pawn.

"That's because you keep distracting me!"

"Distracting you? How so?" He asked. Kay bit her lip, and held her arm. She looked away.

"I can't say. You just are." She stated softly. Edgeworth sat there utterly confused but went back to playing the game.

"Well, I'll try to not distract you as I am supposedly doing." He said. Kay didn't say anything. They kept on playing, and Kay was silent throughout the whole thing. She still wasn't making very good choices in her moves. In fact she was making worse. "Are you alright?" Edgeworth asked, worriedly. Kay looked up at him.

"Yeah, I'm fine." She said.

"You're not focused." He moved a bishop to take another pawn of hers. It was now in a position to take the king. "Check."

"Ah!" Kay moved her hands around frantically looking for a place for her king to escape. She moved her king to the side. "Not anymore!" Edgeworth moved his bishop diagonally towards her king. She moved her King one more space to her right. Edgeworth moved his pawn forward. It could take the king diagonally.

"Check." Kay was in trouble now. Her king couldn't move anywhere because her rook was in the way. She then realized her Queen had a clear path to take his pawn. She moved her queen and took his pawn.

"Ha! Gotcha!" Kay shrilled in victory. Edgeworth gave out a laugh that sent shivers down her spine. "Wh-what?"

"You're right where I want you." He moved his bishop diagonally upward to take her queen. This not only put her at a high disadvantage, but also put her king in check. "Check." Kay began to panic again. She moved her king just below his bishop. Edgeworth moved his bishop diagonally downward. Next to her king.  Kay moved her rook out of the way so that her king could eventually move there. Little did she know how big of a mistake that was.

Edgeworth moved a pawn of his forward so that it was two spaces away from the edge of the board. Kay moved her king back to it's original spot, and Edgeworth did the same with his bishop. "Check." He said with a smirk. Kay frantically moved her king to the corner of the board where her rook was. Edgeworth moved his bishop diagonally downward next to her king. He had finally gotten her cornered.

"Checkmate."

"Wait what?! How?" He pointed to the spaces across the board.

"The king can only move one space in any direction without jumping over pieces. You can move your king ot the left because, my bishop is in that spot. You can't move it forward, because you'd be going into a check by my bishop, and you can't move it diagonally either way because, one way it would be the end of the board, and the other is a check with my pawn. Game over." He gave a gentle smile. Kay had her mouth wide open through the whole explanation. Out of frustration, she flipped the board over, making the pieces fall everywhere.

"Well, there isn't a checkmate anymore!" Edgeworth stepped back in shock, but then bent down to pick up the pieces, and the board.

"Oh my. Such a temper. You've never done this before."

"Maybe this time, you've made me a bit more angry than I usually am!"

"By the way, could you pick up the pieces on your side?" He asked. Kay turned away.

"Do it yourself!" Something was definitely wrong here. Kay had gotten angry and frustrated before, but never to the extent she was at now. Edgeworth placed the pieces into the portable board, and placed it on his desk. He then stood up and walked over to Kay.

"Kay.."

"What?"

This was the only explanation he had.

"Do you love me?"

Kay was silent for a bit. Edgeworth was silent as well, waiting for an answer.

".... How did you know?" She asked, softly. Her back still turned away.

"There's a character archetype I often see in anime known as the tsundere. A character who is harsh on the outside to the main, mostly likely male character. However, she is secretly in love with him. I thought about it, and your tantrum just now seemed to fit it perfectly, so I thought to ask."  Kay was still silent. They both waited in silence for a few seconds, when without warning, Kay swirled around and kissed him.

"God, you're always so logical about these things. Can't you say something romantic like, "I felt it in my heart. My feelings for you can no longer hold itself in!!"?"

"Would you want me to say something like that?" He asked with a chuckle. "That's cheesy as hell.."

"Not really, hehe." She giggled. Edgeworth smiled and pulled her into a hug. He kissed her on the forehead softly, and looked down at her.

"What do you say we finish cleaning up?"

She smiled back up at him. "Okay."
