Chapter two: shattered windows

The next day I wake up too the sound of our neighbor mowing his grass. I stare at my ceiling for a good ten minutes before deciding I don't want to be late for school. I straighten my hair and put on a little mascara. I never put on much makeup because I don't want to look fake like some of the girls at our school.
I walk down stairs and grab an apple out of the fridge. Removing the orange sticky note from the fridge I see that it's from my mom.
Good morning honey. Your dad and I had an important meeting today with the board. We will try to see you tonight!
-Mom
They are never home, I shouldn't even expect them to be anymore so I don't know why I hope that one day they will come through the door and realize that they have a daughter who loves them and wants to be with them.
I turn away from the fridge and see a flash of black and the bushes move outside my window. I freeze and goosebumps shudder down my spine as I reach for the phone but then when nothing else moves I tell myself I was being paranoid and that it was the wind or a squirrel.
Grabbing my bag as I head out the door I start walking down the street. As I turn to the next street James somehow pops into my head. I wish he was here and I wouldn't be so alone. I smile at the thought and when I here a squeal I am brought back to reality. A group of freshmen girls are squealing about some boy that waved at them.
The ten minute bell rings an I start towards my homeroom. Michaela catches up with me as I walk into Mrs. Finch's room.
A man stands by the chalkboard and writes his name on the board. We must have a substitute. The sub was tall and wore a black jacket. I noticed he had dark black hair and fair skin when he turned around from the chalkboard.
"Hello everybody, I'm Mr. Smith and I'm your substitute today." he explains. "Today each of you must write about what you learned from your packet that you got yesterday and it must be a whole page. Your packets and papers are due at the end of class."
I get out a piece of notebook paper as Michaela and I squeeze into two seats next to Audrey. I start writing about how students should behave when I notice that Mr. Smith was standing directly behind me. I freeze but quickly recover and turn to face him to ask if everything was okay but before I do he walks past me to the teacher desk and jots something down on a piece of paper.
The rest of the class goes by quickly and then the bell rings. I get up quickly so that I can talk to Michaela and Audrey about how weird the sub was, but I was stopped by Mr. Smith.
"Caroline Janson," he paused "please stay after class. I need to speak with you."
I stop in my tracks and turn around slowly. As I walk up to the front of the room Audrey makes a sad face at me and mouths we'll wait for you out side to me.
I give her a small smile and step up to meet Mr. Smith's black eyes. He says nothing until the door closes and he looks up at me.
"Your name is Caroline Janson?!" He asks in a strong voice.
"Yes." I say not very convincingly. He looks out the window and nods. I turn to see what he is looking at but then I know. Two men in black suits come smashing through the windows with a crash. Shards of glass come spiraling into the classroom. I try to shield my face from the flying glass. I hear a girl scream as she walks into the room dropping her books. Mr. Smith then pushes her out of the classroom and locks the door. I see Audrey and Michaela look through the door window as a pair of hands grab my arm and pulls me towards the broken window. I struggle as a man puts a brown bag over my head. I try to get the person to let go of my hands and I scream. The men tie my hands together behind my back but I continue to fight. Kicking and screaming until I feel something hit my head, hard and all I see is black. Nothing.
