Chapter One

Competing Hard

The last jump was only a gallop away.

I pulled Midnight back to a smooth, steady, calm canter ready for the 3 strides required.

1...., 2...., 3...., UP.

We soared over the 3 foot log, splashing into the cooling water.

I couldn't help having a little giggle has Midnight splashed around enjoying the cooling water after an amazing run through our favourite event, Cross Country.

I greeted my Mum and Dad at the finish line.

We hugged, kissed and jumped around with joy.

I walked Midnight back to the truck, were his paddock buddies were waiting for him.

He nickered gently to the two miniatures.

The three of them together are inseparable.

If one goes they all go.

When Midnight was a baby he needed a companion, a model, so we used the two best models to pull him into line.

My two miniatures that I broke in when I was only 5.

The two of them were brothers.

I called them, Minions.

I connected the truck hose onto a tap.

I washed Midnight down, scraped him, rugged him then took him and the 'Minions' to have some grass.

I took the three of them back to the truck.

I put them into their traveling yards, gave them water and some hay.

When every Grade 5 had done their cross country course, we all went up to the bar.

They were announcing the winners of the Grade 5 2014 ODE.

"Welcome, ladies and gentlemen" Spoke the speaker.

"Thank you all for coming to the 2014 ODE of OakWood!"

"Well done to everyone who competed"

"You all rode well"

"Now to announce the Grade 5 winners"

"In 10th place is Rosie McNeil on Magic Moon"

"In 9th place is Mia Smith on That Strawberry One"

"In 8th place is Jessica Freeman on Music Man"

"In 7th place is Nicola LongBottom on He's A Lunar"

"In 6th place is Naomi LongBottom on DJ Is Back"

"In 5th place is Cassidy Mundy on She's A Diva"

"In 4th place is Carina Pycroft on PlayBoy's Girl"

"In 3rd place is Ashlyn Clift on She's My Poppy"

"In 2nd place is Chloe Miller on MoonWalk's Back"

"And in 1st place we have Sarah McLeod on Hyde Park Midnight Walk!"

"Sarah McLeod has now won a OakWood Saddle Pad, $500 for horse care and is now qualified for the Junior Eventing Championship!"

I couldn't believe my eyes!

I just qualified for my biggest goal ever!

I thought I was in a dream.

I was astonished!
