"Vanessa! Hurry up! You're going to be late!" My mom exclaimed from the bottom of the stairs.
"Yeah, I'm almost ready!" I yelled back down the stairs. Today was the day that I was moving into my dorm room. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it yet, but I guess I'll find out later.
Since it is move in day, I'll be meeting a lot of new classmates that I would like to make a good impression on, so I decided to dress up. I was wearing a see-through button up purple collared tank top with a navy-blue camisole underneath it. For bottoms, I pulled on my white jean shorts. In order to complete my ensemble, I wore gold thong sandals. Oh! I couldn't forget the most important part, my necklace. I threw on my long gold elephant necklace to tie it all together.
Seeing as I was running behind, I dashed down the stairs to grab a banana and granola bar to hold me until lunch time today. I couldn't help but wonder how today would turn out. Meeting my roommate, participating in orientation and spending my first night in my dorm room.
As I moseyed out of the house that's been my home for the past eighteen years of my life, I already became a little homesick. I notice the cars that my parents and I had loaded up the two cars last night were sitting in the driveway all ready to go. Even though a lot of colleges don't allow freshman to bring cars on campus, I luckily am able to at mine. Reaching my car, I take one last glance at my house before I elope on this new journey in my life called college.
Turning to my parents who are standing by their white Ford Escape, I declare, "I'm ready to go."
"Okay, here we go then," my mom says with some enthusiasm in her voice as her and my dad climb into their vehicle.
Two Hours Later
Glancing up in the distance, I see the start of the campus grounds. My hands begin to sweat, and my heart begins to race. What is happening to me? Am I becoming nervous? My life is changing so fast before my eyes, if I blink I'm afraid I'll miss everything.
As I park my car in front of my dorm building, I see many new students lugging suitcases and boxes into the building. This is my home for the next four years of my life. Welcome home Vanessa.
Climbing out of my car, I meet my parents and we walk into this new place together. Right when we reach the lobby of the building, there are two college aged students standing my a table.
The girl with long curly brown hair greets me enthusiastically, "Hi! I'm Georgia, one of the Resident Assistants for this building." She holds out her hand to shake mine.
Hesitantly, I stick my hand out to shake her hand while responding, "Hi Georgia, I'm Vanessa." I could feel the sweat on my hand when I shook her, which a bit embarrassing. After pulling my hand back, I wiped my hand on the side of my pant leg, being careful so she didn't notice it.
"It's nice to meet you Vanessa," she says with a smile. "Hold on one second," she requests of me. She turns around quickly to face the table that sat behind her. Digging through a pile of papers, she found what she was searching for within it. Facing me again, she shows me the two sheets that she is holding in her hands. "Okay, so this first sheet holds a lot of important information for you, like your floor and room number. Not only that, it also has contact information that you can use if you ever need to get a hold of your resident assistant, so you want to keep that sheet in a safe place," she informs me and then hands me the sheet. Continuing on, she talks about the second sheet, "Now this one here is your room contract. By signing this, you agree to the condition of the room that it's in and hold responsibility for it while you reside in it. If you follow me, I'll get you your room key and show you to your room."
