Chapter 17

The next day was confusing. I rolled out of bed, showered, and dressed as usual, but then I was told to go down to the prison cells. There was apparently something that Marista hadn't told me that needed to be said by her.

As I walked down to see her, Uncle Spock fell into step beside me. Surprisingly, he had brought up the subject and agreed, now that he knew that we were blood relatives.

"Good morning," I said, smiling tightly. With all the thoughts running through my mind, I couldn't conjure a real one.

"Good morning, Fallon. Are you going to see Marista as well?"

"I am. Why are you going?"

"I spent no time with my sister the past thirty years. It seems only logical that I would want to speak with her more than once."

"Ah, yes. Logical."

"Why are you going to see her?"

"The captain wanted me to. She has something to tell me apparently."

He nodded and we walked in silence.

After telling the guard at the door who we were here to see, Uncle Spock and I walked in and stood in front of her.

"Good morning," she said. "I trust you slept well? Both of you?"

"My sleep was filled with nightmares, as you can probably imagine," I said.

She nodded. "Why are you here?"

"The captain spoke with you after I left yesterday and because of whatever you were talking about I was told to come here. You must have something to say to me."

"Although I did taser Spock to make my escape after you knew I was on board, I did not break your warp. I have neither the knowledge nor the want to do that efficiently time and time again."

I didn't believe her, and she knew this. "Spock can tell you-hybrids such as ourselves cannot easily tell lies. Ask me anything, and you will know if I lie."

I raised an eyebrow, but decided to put her to the test. "Are you my birth mother?"

"Yes."

Uncle Spock jumped in then, just to test her for my sake I think. "When we were children, did you say to me that you wished to live on earth, away from our mother and father?"

"No. I loved it on Vulcan. I never wanted to leave."

His eyes narrowed. "Marista, think back a long time ago. When we were young children."

She gasped. "I did? Oh, I wish I had never done that!"

He looked at me. "I think this checks," I said. "Marista, do you know who sabotaged our warp core?"

"No," she said, but bit her lip and closed her arms on herself.

Uncle Spock looked at her sharply. "This will be quicker if you tell the truth."

"Alright. I do know him. Only his face, not his name."

"What does he look like?"

"He is short and skinny, like a child, but his face is older. That is all I remember of him, because I saw him only for a second."

"Where did you get the shape-shifting technology?" asked Uncle Spock.

"I found it while exploring Clatrova."

I frowned. "I thought it was uninhabited before the Vulcans moved there?"

"It had been, for many years," he said. "The last race annihilated themselves. They were very advanced and refused to share their knowledge with anyone else."
