Chapter 22: You'll Be Okay.
(JC's POV)
Ellie's face is a deathly pale and with a sharp inhale of air she collapses to the ground. Her body lays there in a heap in front of my feet, shaking vigorously. For a minute I sit there staring down at her in shock, but eventually I come around to my senses. I lift up her tiny, frail body and cradle her in my arms, as I race down the stairs calling for Sophia. Calling for anyone.
As the bottom of the stairs approach I realize the situation down there isn't much better. Blood pools around Lola, trickling down the corners of her mouth. I find Ricky curled up in a fetal like position, crying. "She just won't stop. The blood. It doesn't stop coming."
Tears stain his cheeks and he wraps his arms around his knees, rocking back and forth slowly in shock. He continually whispers that it won't stop and fear begins to settle in.
Ellie continues to shake violently in my arms and like Ricky says, the blood continues to trail down Lola's cheeks and onto the floor, surrounding her head in a puddle of red.
Finally, I make the ideal decision to call 911. I lie Ellie down on the couch, and wait for the paramedics to arrive. Time seems to slow and the air around me freezes. Nothing in this world matters more to me than Ellie and here she is practically dying right in front of me. The red blurs my mind and it's all I see.
Just the never ending red pool of blood trickling out of Lola's mouth and the sickly pale, white of Ellie's face before she collapsed. I can see how it all started. Late at night or maybe early this morning, Lola slept peacefully, until woken up only to wretch up blood onto the floor, wakening her lover beside her.
I can see the tears dripping down onto her face, as Ricky shakes her, begging through tears for the blood to stop. Then it was only an hour or so later, when Ellie awoke to find me half awake and collapse to the ground, fatally pale.
These images are to haunt me forever.
It wasn't till then, that I noticed the paramedics had arrived. Most of them surrounded Ellie more concerned with her condition. The four men, dressed in dark blue and exuberant yellow plastic like suits, pick up her small, breakable figure and haul her off to the ambulance. They said they'd come back for Lola. And they did. No one bothers to ask how Ricky and I feel, they just told us we could ride in the ambulance with Lola, when they came to get her. The ride was bumpy, quick, and tear filled. The paramedics bombard Ricky with questions, but all that came out was tears and croaks of despair. He continually says to them, "The blood it just kept coming and coming. I couldn't stop it..."
Soon after that we arrive at the hospital, the girls are instantly taken to critical care, while we're stuck in the waiting room. Just waiting. Nerve racking minutes pass by, then hours, then almost the whole day. But finally a nurse comes out and tells us we're allowed to come see them. Ricky and I bolt up out of our seats and race over to nurse. As she leads down to their room, she explains to us that they aren't in critical care and that Ellie is fully awake and aware now. But Lola is still asleep and in a frail condition. All that matters though is that Ellie is alright. She's okay now. Everything can go back to normal. Right? Wrong. As we approach the door, we can hear screaming. A loud, deafening shriek emits down the hall, causing the nurse to panic. "GET ME OUT OF HERE!! I CAN'T BE IN HERE!!" Ricky's eyes widen at the sound of the voice. Her usual soft, cheery voice is now clouded with fear, terror, and sadness. Tears stream down her pale face as we enter. "Lola-" "HELP ME!! PLEASE!!" Lola cries, begging to be released.
Ellie is in shock and backs away as far as she can from her friend as if she's a demon. A bundle of nurses and doctors burst into the room, trying to calm Lola down. Her face is drained of color and tears pour down her face like a waterfall. She screams as loud as humanly possible, scaring everyone, including Ricky. He looks startled, as if he's looking at another girl. Lola goes on and screams, "I DON'T WANT TO BE LIKE MY DAD!! GET ME OUT OF HERE!! GOD DANGIT LET ME OUT!!" Her dad... Then it clicked. This is the same hospital her dad passed away in. I notice Ellie looking at the door and more fear washes over her already terror stricken face. This must be the room too..
Oh my.. Ricky and I are told to leave, but with hesitation, they force us. We wait outside the door, with out ears pressed to the door, listening to the begging cries from Lola. But then we hear another cry, but it doesn't come from Lola. It comes from the room next to it. Ricky hears the cry too, so he peers into the small window on the door beside Ellie's and Lola's. He gasps and bursts into the room. I follow behind him. "Sophia!?" We both blurt out. Her cheeks are tear stained and Connor is beside her comforting her. "My poor baby" she cries, holding her stomach. What? Connor shakes his head as if to tell us not to ask, but it was too late. Ricky had already done so. More tears pour down her face and she mutters a few words. "I had a miscarriage."
