"We first met in America. Your father was 20 at the time, he was there for a very important business meeting."
He wasn't there to see you? Mary said with a disappointed look on her face. Cora could see it in her face and realized how disappointed she was.
"Just wait, and you will see." Cora said giving her a reassuring look, which Mary took as a sign that everything would turn out just fine.
Okay. She said as she sighed and rolled her eyes.
"Well for this meeting he had to come to New York..." But before she could get out another word Mary interrupted.
That's where your from isn't it mama?! She said with a twinkle in her eye and a huge grin from one ear to another.
Yes dear, it is. Now let me finish or we will never make it to dinner! Cora said giggling looking at the excitement on her daughters face. "Anywho, at the same time your father was walking down the sidewalk, I ran straight into him, and fell straight on my backside. He helped me and I apologized for I was not paying attention to where I was going. Your father was so angry at me that he began to yell at me which turned into a fight. He told me to watch where I was going, and then walked off in a hurry. After he left I started to sob for I was so ashamed at what I had done..." But before she could finish her statement there was another interruption, except it was not her mischievous, excited young 14 year old that had interrupted her just a few minutes earlier.
"Knock knock, can I come in." Robert said sneaking through Mary's door into her bedroom.
Papa! Your home! Cried Mary as she jumped over Cora and off the bed, straight into her fathers arms in a very unladylike manner. But Cora didn't say anything, to be honest, she wished she could do the same thing, she had not seen him all day, between her keeping up with the lunch menus and making sure the maids kept the house neat, while her husband had to make sure the estate was still standing and running properly.
"Hello there, and how is my darling 14 year old today?" He said, while enjoying the warm embrace he was receiving from his eldest daughter.
I am quite well. Thank you. Mary said as she unwrapped her arms from around his neck and gave him a peck on the cheek.
"And what exactly are my two girls up to?"
Mama was just telling me how you and...
"Nothing, absolutely nothing." Cora said interrupting her daughter so she would not finish her sentence.
"Are you absolutely positive?" Asked Robert suspiciously.
"Yes, I am quite positive." Cora responded with a slight grin , receiving a rather suspicious glance from her husband, knowing she wasn't quite telling the whole, entire truth.
"Well, since there is nothing going on, they are about to serve dinner."
Oh please Mama! Just a little while longer? I want to hear the rest of the story.
"No" said Cora sternly. "The food will be getting cold, and we know what happens when Carson has to wait on us." She said with a slight giggle in her tone. "Come now, chop chop go get washed up and see to it that Edith and Sybil get to nanny and get washed up as well." She said walking swiftly over to Mary and giving her a tap on the bottom, shooing her out the door.
Yes ma'am. Mary responded with a roll of her eyes, and stomped straight out the door closing it behind her.
"Cora, is there anything you would like to tell me?"
"I do not believe I do, Robert. Now if you will excuse me." She said with a smirk on her face. But before she could walk out the door, she felt a hand at her waist and pulling her in tight to his chest while staring down into her warm, blue eyes that he fell in love with all those years ago.
"You know dear, I will find out sooner or later." He said snickering.
"I don't know about that, you will have a hard time trying to get it out of me." Said Cora as a slight grin showed up on her face. But just before Robert could respond to his wife's slightl sarcastic response, Mary came back through the door.
Slightly poking her head through the door, she cautiouslywalked into the bedroom, knowing her mother would probably be a bit upset seeing her come back, after the way she rolled her eyes and stomped her way out the door.
Mama?
As Mary had expected Cora was quite upset with her.
Mama? After dinner will you finish the story?
"Of course I will. Now go get ready for dinner." Cora said. Mary could tell her mother was getting agetated, nodded her head and quickly scattered out of the bedroom.
As Cora and Robert were walking out of the bedroom, he intertwined their fingers, then leaned over and whispered in her ear. "I will find out sooner or later."
