"This is it! Your new home." we had stopped in front of shortish hallway, it wasnt too far from the west wing's main lobby, probably so they are closer to all the doctors. Four doors lined each wall.
"well do you want to meet your hallmates? They've been really excited to meet you!"
"oh uh, yeah sure."we walked further into the hallway and up to the first door on the right. Claire knocked on the door, it was covered in cheesy puns and a bunch of other random stickers. One of my favorites was a bumper sticker that read "doctors be warned, I have apples." it was a little cheesy but i thought it was appropriate.in the middle of the cluster on pictures and bumper stickers there was a door number, number 263. The boy that opened the door was not what i was really expecting, he was about my height, so relatively short. He had brown hair and a boyish smile. He was wearing a gray oversized sweatshirt and sweatpants. From what i could see of his room it was a mixture of bean bags, stickers and a lot of computer stuff.
"hey Jack, how are you feeling?" Jack rolled his eyes and grumbled something under his breath. He didn't seem to notice me until Nurse Claire introduced me.
He smiled at me, well that was unexpected, he has a really welcoming smile for someone who just scoffed at a nurse.
"hi? Im Ethan." I let out a nervous giggle and stuck my hand out for a hand shake.
¨oh um... here let's to this," he took my hand and put it in the air, he pulled his hand back and made a smacking noise with his mouth as are hands made contact.
"Honestly dude, high-fives are so much better than hand shakes!" He smiled and turned his attention back to the nurse.
"I assume you read my papers?" He asked
"um yes I have, we need to talk." The door slammed as nurse Clair entered leaving me face to face with a door full of pictures
Nurse Claire opens the door a smidgen and motioned down the hallway
"The next door down is is Amy's why don't you go introduce yourself?" I gave her a quick ok, my anxiety building in this weird situation.
I started down the hallway, the next door had pillows laid out in front of it, wierd. The door was covered in art and cat stickers. It took me a few minutes to find a safe place to knock without crumbling the art, i eventually settled on knocking on the wall next to the door. Not long after a girl opened the door, her hair was died blonde and cut to her shoulders it had a nice floof to it. Her hair was kinda curly, it looked like she fell asleep with her hair curled.
She was wearing a white and gray t-shirt and jeans.
¨hi im Ethan." i reached my hand out for a nice hand shake but got a rib cracking hug instead.
"I'm so happy to meet you! Have you been here long?" Her eyes were overflowing with joy and it was a little overwhelming to be honest.
"Umm no i got here a few hours ago i think." She got even more excited if that was even possible, she grabbed me by the hand and led me down the hallway.
"Have you been to your room yet?" she asked the overwhelming excitement dying down to a low boil
"No not yet." she lead me down to the third door to the end,the door was empty compared to the other doors. The only thing hanging from it was a number plack that every door had, mine read #265.
"It's a st.lous tradition to decorate the door before you enter the room."
"Thats a stupid tradition."
"hey don't judge our traditions, no matter how stupid they may be." Amy told me to wait here as she ran back to her room. I stared at my door trying to figure out how to decorate it, by the look of the other two doors that I've seen so far im supposed to put up things that represent me. But what represents me, what could i fit on this door to show what kind of person i am? I stood there for what seemed like forever just thinking on what i could do when Amy came back and interrupted my train of thought.
"So i was thinking you could put some stuff you like on your door, i grabbed my computer and some art supplies." she passed me a box full of colorful strips of paper and other things.
"Can you print me out a couple of maps?" i asked, i could tell she didn't understand what i was thinking. But that's just what made it an original idea i suppose. She agreed and i pointed out a few maps on google that would work, then she was off to the printer. Sure i didn't understand the tradition but that doesn't mean i'm not going to do it.
Amy came back with about five papers. The maps i told her to print where all apart of one big map, so i started putting them together like a puzzle piece on my door the map went from florida all the way to Missouri. I tapped the last map to the door and it looked pretty good. It went from the top left down to the bottom right under the door handle.
"Cool map, now what?" hailey asked, apparently she hadn't caught on yet.
"I need some red dots."
"Red dots? Ok i kinda got what you were talking about earlier but why red dots?" i rolled my eyes and asked her what do you put on a map to show where you have been
"Oooh, you put tacks on maps" i shook my head and she ran off back to her room
I've always wanted to travel the world but right now it seems i can't even travel out side of st.louis.
A few minutes later Amy came back with a piece of red paper and a dot cutter.
It took us a little while but after we finished i was kinda happy she made me do this, Amy also made me a sleep chart that we hung up on the door. It read "how many hours slept"
With a list of days under it. I'm not going to lie it's going to be handy but i doubt i'm going to sleep more than 30 minutes and that's just cat napping.
