The woman was the only one who was nice to me. But that didn't mean I trusted her. I mean, who would trust anybody in a place like this, where they has locked me up and, I was pretty sure, drugged me.
After the incident with the whole ' strap me to a table and drug me,' I woke up lying on a steel table. It was freezing. Somebody had changed me out of my clothes, and into a hospital gown. I lifted my head and looked around.
It seemed like I was in a operation room/scientist lab. Weird machines buzzed around me and I could see steel tables lines with an assortment of sharp objects. I shuddered. Were they going to use those on me?
A door slammed in the distance. Light footsteps echoed through the room, and the woman walked around a corner. I narrowed my eyes as she came and stood next to my head. She smiled sweetly down at me.
"Hey, honey. How are you feeling?" I stared at the fake concerned look on her face. How was I feeling? Well, considering that so far I've been chained up with no memory of being here, had a pain attack, gotten slapped, strapped down onto a table, and drugged, not so great! But I got the feeling that that wasn't the answer she was looking for.
"Why am I here?" I deliberately ignored her question and answered with one of my own. She pursed her lips and shook her head.
"Are you thirsty, darling?" I glared at her. Some instinct inside of my head told me that I couldn't trust a thing this woman had to offer, but hey! It didn't mean I had to be a bitch about it. Maybe if I was civil about this, then I could get some answers.
"No, but thanks" I declined, sweetening my voice. "What's your name? What am I doing here?" I let my voice crack on the last question. It worked! I could see a flicker of sympathy in her eyes as she took in my face, alive with fake fear.
"I can't tell you that, doll." My eyes widened in fake distress, but she showed no signs of giving in. It was time to let down the barricades.
"W-why not? I-I don't unders-stand!" I sniffed a little and turned my head away from her. When I looked at her again, my eyes were wet with tears. I could sense her shell cracking as she stared at my distressed face. I sniffed. Her mouth opened, as if to spill the secrets.
A door slammed and the sound echoed loudly. The lady's face closed up tight, as if somebody had literally zipped her lips shut. She sharply turned with her hands behind her back, as if greeting an official.
"What were you talking about?"
A scent wafted over me. Vanilla. I choked on the scent as it invaded my nostrils. I hated vanilla!
"Well?" the sugary voice drew the word out with surprising intensity. The lady's knuckles tightened on the clipboard she had clenched in her hands. She swallowed.
"Doctor. I was explaining to the subject that it is necessary to withhold information."
I opened my mouth to protest. I was nobodies subject! But the lady shot me a look that stopped me cold. Click, click, the heels stepped closer to my head. My heart rate picked up. A machine out of sight matched the beating with a steady rhythm of beeps. A low laugh echoed from behind me.
"Afraid, little mouse?" the unnamed doctor asked. "I'm not going to hurt you," the beeping slowed down "But, I do have others under my command that would be more than happy to oblige." The beeping sped up until it sounded like a continous line of sound. What the hell was she talking about? Why was I even here?
"Doctor Avery, please-" The lady had spoken up. And she looked like she regretted it. From what I had seen-or heard- so far from the now named Doctor Avery, it didn't seem like she was a person to cross.
Dead silence. Not a sound, except for the beeps. Avery must have moved, because I could now see a skirt in the corner of my eye.
"Continue... But of course, you are allowed to speak in my presense." She moved closer to the lady. I could just make out the back of Doctor Avery when all of a sudden, a loud crack sounded, ringing in my ears. When I looked, the women had doubled over, clutching her face.
What the hell? Avery was nowhere near the lady! And why where my ears ringing? Geez, that was loud. If I hurt, I could only imagine how the lady was feeling.
"Please, keep talking." Another slap from the Doctor. I felt it like she had hit my own cheek. "I would just love to hear what you have to say." Slap. "Enlighten me."
A resounding thud. The lady hit the ground, hard, sobbing and crawling away. Avery's foot lashed out, nailing her right in the head. It snapped back with a sickening lurch and something cracked. She cried out. This was the first time she had made a sound and it cut me to my soul. How could somebody be so evil as to bring such suffering to one another? How could she have done this to me? Because after this time, and the way that she talked like she had such authority over everybody else, I was almost certain that 'Doctor Avery' was the heart and soul of this operatioon. And it was a twisted heart and a blackened soul that was running this place.
"Listen to me!!!" Avery howled, grabbing the women's face and slamming it against the floor. "You. Are. Beneath. Me! I am superior! I AM ABOVE YOU!" By now, the lady was screaming, scrabbling against the floor and trying to get away. "Filth like you don't deserve to live!"
"Stop!" I didn't even know I had spoken until it was too late. Doctor Avery slowley stood up, her head cocked at a weird angle, staring down at the cowering figure beneath her. I felt like shriveling up and sinking into the ground. What would happen to me now?
