she'd known since she was very young that she wasn't like the other girls her age. she didn't like barbie dolls or dressing up the way her friend Alex did. she preferred shorts and t-shirts as opposed to skirts and dresses. as she got older, she refused to put pretty bows in her hair and assume the role of a polite young lady. she told others she didn't belong in high heels and makeup.
she wasn't like the others. they called her out on that.
if only she'd known Alex was going through something similar; if only she'd known he had been shamed for feeling out of place, too.for feeling uncomfortable within his own skin.
