She hummed as she flipped her omelette on the stove, sitting down at her table to enjoy her breakfast.
When finished, she cleared her mess and picked up her cellphone to call her mom who always seemed to be worried about her.
She answered cheerfully, "Beatrice! It's so good to hear from you! How's the new job? How's your apartment? Are you eating? Do you need money?"
Tris laughed, "I'm fine, Momma. I call you everyday, you don't have to worry. My job is fantastic and I'm really happy here. I just wish it was closer to you."
"You can visit in a few months, Honey. I'm just upset you can't fly out for Christmas," she said sadly.
"I know, but I can't take off the first 90 days of this new job. If Christmas were closer to the weekend I could manage, but it's on a Wednesday.." she frowned. Her mom was going to spend the holiday all alone this year. "Can't you fly out here? I have room, Mom."
"I'll think about it. Have a great day, call me later," she said, still sad but happy that her daughter seemed to be doing fine.
--
Her walk to the tall building where she worked was frustrating as she pushed through the throngs of people that crowded in bubbles at each end of every street.
She was just to the lobby when somebody called, "Ma'am!"
Tris swung around to find a tall, handsome man with dark eyes and dark hair. Of course he was tall, she was only 5'2. "I think you dropped this," he said, eyes twinkling with glee and amusement. He held a small fake diamond ring in his palm.
"I-I'm sorry, but I don't believe that it's mine," she chuckled softly.
"Shhh I know this, but I was hoping you'd take it."
"I don't want it, thank you though. I've got to go to work now."
"I work here too, I was dared by my friend to give you this ring. It's from a bubble gum machine," he opened the glass door for her.
"Why?"
He shrugged, adjusting his bag on his shoulder. "it's fun. It's the season of giving. I think you should accept my plastic ring."
"Alright, I accept your plastic ring," she turned to him, not realizing he was so close.
He took her hand gently. Her hand was soft and warm and he smiled genuinely. "Wait make this a promise ring. Will you promise to go to lunch with me?"
She gave a bubbling laugh. "This was a set up."
"It wasn't, not until I saw your beautiful eyes."
"Smooth. I accept your ring and your promise then. Do you want to go to dinner after we get off work?"
-----
Two weeks later
Tris laughed as the man who gave her her fake bubble gum ring, Tobias, swung their clasped hands. "Thanks for dinner," she said sweetly. "I'm very thankful for you giving me my plastic ring."
He laughed. He had such a happy personality and she loved watching his face light up entirely, "It was my pleasure honestly, Trissy, I-" he was cut short by her cellphone ringing in her pocket.
She frowned, "It's my mom. Odd." She picked it up, answering cheerfully as she always did.
"Hello, is this Beatrice? It's Natalie's neighbor, Linda. She had an accident."
Tris stopped in her tracks, dread covering her face as Tobias instantly stepped closer to give her comfort.
"What? Is she okay?"
"I'm not sure, she broke some bones and hit her head pretty hard. She's at the Rushmore hospital."
"Okay, I'll be there by morning. I'm flying out in just a bit," she whispered. She'd probably lose her job for leaving, but her mom was her only family.
She was still standing in shock, but Tobias wrapped his arms around her and held her tight, guiding her into her apartment building. "Let's get you packed and then we'll go to my place so I can grab some things and then we'll fly out. Okay?"
She didn't say anything, not until they had reached her door and she had to unlock it with her keys. "What? You aren't coming with me."
"I am. It's Christmas Eve tomorrow, and I don't have anyone to spend it with here," he chuckled. "I know we've only been seeing each other for a few weeks, but I like you Tris, and I care for you. Let me take care of this for you."
He helped her pack a bag, checking to make sure she had everything she needed before they were on their way.
---
"Why did you come with me?" She whispered from where her head rested on his chest, his arm wrapped tightly around her.
"I told you I cared about you, and it's the busiest travel time of the year. I don't want something to happen to you."
Content with his answer, she thanked him nicely before resting. "Thank you for the ring Tobias."
He smiled and rested his cheek against her head.
--
Natalie had a concussion, a gash on her forehead and had broken both of her wrists. She was glad to see Tris and a man named Tobias. They seem to click magically.
However so, they all managed to spend Christmas together.
