 Chapter 6

Aurelia's POV

Today is a holiday for tiatis.

Not a big surprise, really.

There are lots of cases, but most of them go down to a lower court. Tiati's usually don't have much to do when there weren't any cases.

Bianca had stayed over last night, and she was waking up now.

"Do you finally agree that Sean O'Donnell is hotter?" I ask her, arching an eyebrow. Bianca shakes her head, smiling.

"So, how'd you become a tiati?" I ask conversationally. I putter around the kitchen while Bianca watches.

"I come from a relatively poor family, and I'd always wanted to become one. The process is always hard, but I guess they liked me," Bianca shrugs, dipping her head bashfully.

"It was because you're amazing at it, Bianca," I tell her, truthfully. If she wanted to, she could become the next Madison. Though I sincerely hope she wouldn't ever lose her sweetness.

Bianca blushes. "Well, what about you?"
I roll my eyes, remembering the entire arduous process.

I had just turned sixteen, so I could apply for my job. I knew what I was going to be, of course. I'd had my eyes set on it since I was old enough to know what they were.

A tiati.

They always seemed to have the best lives; the biggest houses, the biggest smiles.

I wasn't jealous; that wasn't allowed. But I really did want to become like them.

"Honey, today's the day. I'm glad you applied to tiati," my mom smiled at me. She seemed to be hiding an emotion, but she covers it up with a grin.

" I'll get going to go to the Tiati Admission Center right now. Bye, mom!" I kissed her cheek, nearly running out of my house.

When I reached, I was discontented, seeings the amount of people milling outside. But I wouldn't show my fear. Instead, I pasted on a huge grin.

"Aurelia Orchid Summers," a voice called over the speakers. "And Audrey Daffodil Taylor."

I walked in nervously, barely glancing at the cheery person next to me. She looked at me.

"Fun, right?" Her voice is even more bubbly.

I tried matching her joyous voice. "Ye-es!" My voice cracked in the middle, embarrassing me.

She chuckled, turning into the room where someone is beckoning towards her. I turned to the only other door.

A man in a black suit stared at me. "Aurelia Orchid Summers. Please sit down. We'll be taking some headshots."

I nodded, wondering what headshots would help with in this process. "Okay!"

I tried to smile as widely as I could while still looking nice. A joke that my mom told me echoes in my mind. Without meaning to, I laughed, the camera still clicking away.

"Very good," the man beamed at me. "Next!"

I slid out of the chair, still confused about how pictures would matter to the tiati process.

I had turned in my written explanation when I had applied for tiati. I waited outside, my insides squirming like a bunch of worms.

The girl who came in with me, Audrey, grinned at me. "Hey! I'm Audrey! Want to be friends?"
