I woke up again from my nap in the hospital because they wanted to keep me overnight. I looked to my right and there was a table with water and saltines on it. I looked to my left and Ava was slumped on the chair. I chuckled to myself and realized how dry my throat was. I sat up and went to grab my water and took a gulp. As I went to drink again, TJ walked through the door with a bouquet of flowers. I smiled at him, or probably looked like I was grimacing at him.
"Hi," I said with my raspy voice.
"Hi." TJ whispers back. He walked to my side and gave me a peck on the lips. I looked in his eyes and he stared back into mine. We did this for a while until he spoke up.
"Are you feeling any better?"
"Yes, I think I felt my leg move?" I said hopefully. Ew who the hell was I sounding all, nevermind. I need to be hype. I was shot and they didn't think I'd wake up.
"You did?" He asked with a bit of a smirk that seemed like he didn't believe me.
"You don't believe me? I'll show you, eventually," I said looking away from him. "Maybe I'll walk back to you if I don't end up walking away from you." I told him seriously. He went silent and then pulled my face back to look at him.
"At this point you're all I'm living for, so if you walk away, I won't be here when you come back." He spoke back. I searched his eyes for a joke but he was as serious as I was. I raised my hand to his face and pulled him down to me and I kissed him. This wasn't just our regular kiss, it was a good-bye kiss. I knew that when Armery and I went into Witness Protection Program, we would need to leave behind our old lives and start over, or at least try. Not that it'd be all that hard to start over for me because I'd been through this before, but I am not sure how Armery would take it.
After I finished my silent good-byes with TJ, I shed a tear, I was going soft. What the hell?
"Everything will work out Ava." I turned my head so fast, I forgot where I supposed to be looking. Once my eyes finally landed on Armery, she was awake with her head propped up on her left hand in the chair.
"How was your nap, sleepy head?" I asked.
"Felt nice to sleep for a bit." She smiled at me.
"Are you ready to leave?" I asked. She looked at me with her eyes wide like I was about to walk out. I rolled my eyes and explained further. "Are you ready to try to start over?" I asked.
She stared at me and looked down. She looked back up at me and nodded. There were agents outside my door waiting for me to be released and at 11:45AM the nurse came in with the release papers and I signed and was released. I was put into a wheelchair as I resisted and was sat into a chair. I was transported from the room to a '97 Toyota Camry and I figured it was because they wanted us to lay low, although we didn't have anything more to live for. Thinking back to everything we'd been through so far, my face started to harden and my emotions started fading. I looked out the window as we rode for what felt like hours. When we finally came to our destination, we were about 7 hours away from "home".When we pulled up to or new home, there were 3 other cars outside. Armery looked at me with the same confusion I stared back at her with.
The door opened and there was another agent besides the 2 that drove us here.
"Ladies, until we are able to find out who did this to Miss Ava here, you will be living here in Wisconsin." The agent explained.
"The fuck?" I said as I was thinking the same thing over and over again.
"The Vasquez family has been kind enough to take you ladies in. They have two sets of twins. Both fraternal. They have a 6 bedroom home, which means you ladies will be sharing a room." He looked at us like he was asking if it was a question. I was skeptical of this entire situation and knew I was not trying to make any new relationships with these people. Yes I was grateful, but I always remember in the back of my mind how untrustworthy everyone else in my life has been to me, or at least those that raised me.
As everyone got out the car, they got the wheelchair out for me and I put my head down and didn't resist anymore. Embarrassment was taking over because I felt weak. We finally made it to the house and it was huge. Stone exterior and modern, expensive looking interior. All the floors were this dark wood color and it ran through the entire house. The walls were a beautiful cream color. It was also a two-story home, I glanced down at this big ass wheelchair and breathed out heavily.
