Chapter 02- "I have to register for school?"
Gordon High School, the first words I read when I arrived at the school. I was in a navy blue dress with blue and white polka dotted Keds.My hair, I had gotten it wet and it dried up into it's curls, there was also a headband in the bag, so I threw that on too. As I am walking up to the school, I notice a few people starting to go into the school, I guess I'm early. I stop one of the students to ask a question. She had chocolate skin with straight black hair and was wearing white shorts and a black tee with black converse.
"Excuse me?" I say.
"Hmm? Uh yes?" She says, clearly not paying much attention.
"Can you tell me where the main office is?"
"I'm sorry, I..can you repeat the question?"
"It's okay ma, I just wanted to know where the main office was." I repeat myself.
"You have a strong accent, you know that?" She says, I shake my head no. "that's okay, follow me to the office."
"Okay." I say and we start towards the office.
"By the way, I'm Paula, I'm a senior here and I play basketball, baseball, football, and soccer." She explains.
"Oh nice you play..wait you play football? Here? At this school?" I ask confused and Paula chuckles.
"Yep, our team is coed." She explains, I am surprised, the only sport I knew about in school that was coed was track and field.
"Oh, that's cool, my name is Ava, it's short for Avary." I say.
"That's a beautiful name, oh and by the way, I'm bisexual."
"Well, we all have our preferences, I don't judge ma, I have no right to." I say.
"I like you, not like that, I like you as in your cool. And....here we are, this is the office." She explains.
"Thank you chica, hopefully I will see you again, because I like you too." I say and waive goodbye to her. I walk into the office and see a lady sitting at the desk, it's obvious that she's Puerto Rican. I walk over to the desk and introduce myself.
"Excuse me, my name is Avary Tomas and um, I wanted to start school here." I say, not really knowing what to say.
"Did your mama or papa register for you to be here?" She asks.
"Uh, lo siento, pero ¿qué significa eso?" I ask her in a hushed tone.
"What does what mean honey?" She speaks back to me in english.
"Register, I mean I know what it means but, I have to register for school?" I ask feeling stupid. The lady smiles slightly at me.
"Yes sweetheart you must." She says and I feel like crying right now.
"Thank you anyways." I say.
"Wait, there are a few exceptions to this rule, and if any apply to you, you go here for free." She says and right at this point I'm praying to god that she says if your parents disown you, you are in.
"Okay, what are they?" I ask.
"If your parents have died and you have no other family around, if you are a runaway, if you are just coming out of the hospital for self harm, if you have one family and they are sick and hospitalized..."
As she is speaking I start to lose hope, there is nothing that they can do for me and I won't succeed in life.
"And lastly," she says "if you have been disowned from your parents." she finishes. I literally start crying, tears streaming down my face, I cannot thank god enough for giving me a chance to change myself for the better.
