"Join my pack."
"No!"
"Join my pack!"
"No!"
"Join my..."
"For the thousandth time, NO!" I groaned as I pushed myself off of his lap. I wasn't really in the mood to continue cuddling up to him when he only ever talked about his pack.
"Why not?" Cameron asked, his tone getting serious.
Cameron was the Beta of the neighboring pack, Red Moon. We met when I was sent to his pack for a medical conference. At that point he had just been looking to start dating again after recovering from the loss of his mate. It took some convincing but I eventually agreed to try things to see where it would go, that was around 15 years ago.
Now, I've been told that going into a relationship with someone who has lost their mate is rather stupid. There's a chance they have not fully recovered from the loss, that they can never fully commit to a relationship and that they will always compare you to them, but we've taken things slow. I also have a chance, however small, that I may have a mate out there.
But as the years together went on those fears seemed pointless and it became as natural as breathing air. It was nice to have someone beside me, a family to call my own. He even had a grown up son that I got along well with, not as a parent, but as someone that makes sure his father is okay.
"Because; then I might never see anyone from my pack again." I told him. "Our packs aren't exactly best of friends... it can only end badly for me, and I don't know anyone in your pack."
"What are you doing today?" he sighed, changing the subject.
"How does that-"
"What are you doing today?"
"I'm on office duty." I gave in, sighing and getting out of bed.
"Then spend the free time you have thinking it over." He said and just as I was about to interrupt he continued, "You'd have me and you know Jacob."
"Your son isn't exactly a friend." I said, rummaging through my wardrobe for my work top. "Anyway, there's a lot of paperwork to check, I haven't had a day without surgery or check-ups in nearly a month." I argue, pulling on my trousers.
"You have breaks..." His big puppy dog eyes glistened, but stared too far below my eyes for me to take his act seriously. "You don't have any family to hold you back and you could still work at the hospital where all your friends are."
"I have an old debt with the alpha's family."
"Yeah, from his father..." he groaned getting up and following me through to the kitchen. "Come-on, you know your pack is plenty well established without you helping them."
"A promise is a promise."
"Then think about it."
"I already am, and it's a no..." I smiled, picking up my keys, knowing he wouldn't risk following me outside, even though no one lived near me.
"Then a visit." He called after me. "You'll love it when you see it."
"Fine, but we'll talk about this later." I yelled, flopping into my car. "Lock up when you leave."
