"Hello?" I asked the device, having woken to it screeching it's ringtone on the table near my bed. Not having checked who it was, as the screen had been far too light to even dream of trying to read, I asked; "Who is it?"
"Hey, it's Cameron, is everything okay over there, you haven't called me in over two days?" He said.
Two days?!
"The flight." I said. "The flight was about 22 hours and between surgery, aftercare, drinking enough to survive and sleeping, I haven't had time for anything else." I explained, finally having some rational enter my body.
"Oh, it's fine then, I was just wondering if it would be okay for you to come for the visit my pack the day you get back. Alpha Jayden said that it would be better to do it sooner because there seems to be a lot of tension building up between us and the Black Shawl pack." He explained.
That was another reason for being reluctant to join his pack; the pack I was in now was peaceful and avoided conflict, his didn't. Black Shawl pack were known for being brutal and strong but they also never attacked unless they were provoked, Cameron's pack was known for the way it provokes other Packs to attack. They had gotten lucky so far but the Black Shawl pack would likely wipe them out in under an hour.
"Yeah, that should be fine." I said with a small smile and the sound of my stomach groaning out for some food. "I'm going to get some food because the last meal I had, I never got around to finishing." I told him, thinking about my breakfast that I had left for Carter, a friend at the hospital I work at, to finish whilst being rushed to the airport.
"That's fine, I'll see you soon, love you." He said.
"Yeah, see you." I couldn't bring myself to say those words. There was still a part of me that could not accept him, still hoping the mate that was made for me was out there searching just like I had been, or perhaps born after me and had not long been searching.
As the phone went dead I dropped my head the remaining distance to my pillow before sighing and preparing myself to get ready to leave.
After having a large breakfast, I went to see Alpha Logan, who insisted that I return soon so that he could properly thank me and then I left.
I slept most of the plane ride back, the rest of it I spent either eating or reading a book.
When I arrived at the airport I called Cameron only for it to go straight to answerphone. He had known I was coming so he should have been there waiting for me, his phone had probably died, or he was in the toilet and there was no connection.
The longer I waited, the more I began to doubt my theory. He had probably just fallen asleep or forgot that I was coming back today.
I sighed and ended up getting a taxi to my house so I could drop off my things and get changed into something more comfortable. It was rare that he hadn't called me already and a knot was starting to form in my stomach as I left for his pack.
When I arrived my stomach sank even lower when I found the boarders unprotected. I knew that this wasn't right, a pack that picks as many fights as it can would always make sure no one could sneak in unprotected. I sat in my car, staring at the barricaded road and knew that I needed to turn back, that something was wrong but there was a part of me that was desperate to enter. It was fighting my every attempt to put the car in reverse and leave.
I sat there for what felt like hours, frozen before I gave into the urge, knowing I could not leave and that whatever it was would eventually come for me too.
As I walked into the pack territory it felt eerily quiet. The last time I had come to the pack, it had been for a conference and the entire pack had been full of talking and laughing and people. Sigma had patrolled the boarders constantly, you could not go more than ten meters from one before you reached the next, yet there was no one. The trees did not even move for fear of making a sound.
