As Lilly finished packing her school bag with textbooks and pencils, she wandered to her open window to shut it.
Her mother was never able to teach her simple life lessons or how to protect herself, so Lilly had to learn from observation. Once, when she was 9 year old, she heard the news story of a burglary near her house. The criminal had easily got in through an open window. In a worry that she would also be robbed, Lilly always shut the window whenever she wasn't home. The cruel world taught Lilly many more simple lessons like this then her mum ever did.
When Lilly was close enough to view the windowsill properly, she saw a mysterious object lying there, its ends being picked up by the wind. Bending closer, she saw that it was a feather, a beautiful present left by one of the morning birds.
Lilly was no expert on birds. She had watched the odd documentary about them in her lifetime but never knew many species or properties of the flying wonders. Despite the lack of knowledge, she had a favourite; the blue tit. Her familiarity to the birds vibrant blue, yellow and green colours meant she instantly recognised what species the feather belonged to.
She supposed that the blue tit had caught its under feathers on the chip of her window frame, causing it to loose one of its lighter, fluffier quills. The contrasting colours of blue and yellow on the thumb-sized feather hypnotised her momentarily. She had an odd love for the majestic specie as it was the one that caught her interest 10 winters ago. The one that popped her protective bubble and opened her up to the world. This love was something that could not be easily rid by the demon. Even though she had visioned herself slowly slicing a silent birds throat and drooled at the thought of licking its warm blood off the delicate feathers it beheld, she never visioned killing a blue tit. They were too pure and beautiful. Just like her.
The sudden show of mercy made in that moment, the vow to not kill this one type of common bird, made the demon mad. Incredibly mad. So mad in fact, it flowed out into her next action after taking the feather in her small palm. Just like she was aiming to do, Lilly shut the window. But the sudden outburst of madness the monster had let out, made her slam it so hard down, a branch of cracks formed in the bottom left corner.
"What the fuck was that, Lilly!?" her mum shouted from downstairs. Lilly didn't know how to respond for she feared the amount of trouble she would get into if her mother saw her broken window.
In a moment of uncertainty, she grabbed her backpack- feather still in hand- and ran for the front door, refusing to speak to her mum.
Once she was down the steps, through the gate, out of the estate and finally at her desired destination, she let out a hefty sigh of relief. At least she didn't have to worry about her mum for the next few hours. Those few hours still unknowingly holding her moment of perfect pleasure.
Lilly stood under the bus stop where a tiny year 7 girl hid under her oversized coat and one of her classmates, Stephen, leant casually against the pole. The two year 11's exchanged greetings (Lilly's being in a breathless tone) and stood silently, waiting for the school bus.
Before Lillys "transformation" to this death filled, blood-thirsty but quiet girl, she was afraid of many things. Spiders, knives, fire, snakes, roller coasters, heights, loud noises, small spaces, clowns, people, death. She was a nervous wreck, shattered by her childhood. It was almost impossible for her to do anything typically normal without her fears stopping her. But now, she had changed, all them fears had seemingly disappeared. Flowed out of her body. Or maybe the monster had consumed them. Probably the latter. Either way, all but two had gone. One fear was her mothers unpredictable behaviour and the other fear was her bully.
They were someone who would pick out and beat up Lilly whenever they had the chance. Someone who would constantly degrade and humiliate Lilly. Someone with such strength and control over Lilly, the monster was surprised by it. And, as if on cue, that someone marched down the path towards Lilly and the other students. 'Bitchface' Lilly said in her thoughts. The real name of the bully though was Beth. And she terrified Lilly. But maybe the demon was planning something very devious to finally put an end to Bitchface's reign.
