Chapter sixteen: It was very dark and very silent.

Travis' arms shot up with excitement. ''We did it!'' He yelled. His eyes sparkled as he turned towards me. ''We fucking did it!'' He looked like a little child as he proudly glanced down at our camp. ''Don't you have anything to say?'' He asked me and for a second I thought he would jump up and down like a little child. He didn't.
I shrugged and eyed the branched that we had used for shelter. it looked fragile, like the slightest breeze could make it topple over. To be completely honest with you, I wasn't even sure if one of us could fit in there let alone the both of us. Perhaps it could fit a three-year-old child but definitely not two seventeen-year-olds.
''Nothing?'' He asked.
I swallowed. ''Well, I guess, it's...'' I gesticulated wildly. ''I guess... it's okay.'' To be quite frank, it was terribly ugly and couldn't even remotely be close to a shelter.
The definition of a shelter is something that covers or affords protection. This rackety, awkwardly piled branches didn't seem like it would protect us from anything.
Travis' whole posture changed in the blink of an eye. His shoulders sagged and his arms flopped down. ''Okay?'' He echoed.
I glanced away, not really being able to cope with his glaring gaze.
''We spent four hours building this!'' He snapped.
''Well, theoretically we spent three and a half hours trying to find branches and only half an hour actually building this...'' I trailed off. Guess I should have kept my stupid mouth shut.
He opened his mouth to fire something but I cut him off. ''Wait. How do you know how long we've been working on the... shelter?'' I threw a dirty look at the 'shelter' and then had my eyes fix solemnly on Travis.
His hand shot into his pocket and retrieved a watch. I blinked several times. ''Wait,'' I let go an airy laugh and made a weird movement with my hand. ''We stayed out here for four hours building this... pathetic, puny... b-branch thing!'' My voice was pretty loud towards the end but can you blame me? He had forced me to look for branches in an area where there were practically none. And the cherry on top was the blaring, hot sun that glared down at us.
''You should calm down,'' Travis said after a while of him staring silently at me.
Don't tell me what to do! I wanted to yell but didn't.
I tried smiling at him. ''We could've used it as a compass,'' I informed him in a tense voice.
He crossed his arms over his chest and cocked an elegant brow. ''Yeah?''
''Yeah!''
He scoffed. ''And you know how to do that?''
No. ''Yes,'' I said a little too fast.
If possible his brow rose even higher. His eyes, seeming black right now, bore into me. And I had the feeling he was barging into my soul. ''Okay,'' he said.
''Okay what?'' I asked.
''Okay,'' he flung his watch at me. ''Lead us home.''
I looked at him and then at the watch.
''So where do we go?'' He asked challengingly.
I didn't know what to do with this. In movies people often did it. To be honest, I had never understood how a watch could somehow transform into a compass. There was no 'North' sign or anything.
