C O L I N
I used to wonder why adults gave kids a drug that made them loose themselves, when all they were trying to do was find themselves.
Generations addicted to the sweet sap that tingled our hearts and sent pulses through our veins. Alcohol never tasted good in my opinion but my body had become custom to the substance after numerous parties.
Parties never bought anything good out of them, something always went wrong but in those few hours, it didn't matter. I never saw the worse parts, only the girls, the blasting sounds and movements of life connecting with music — no harm in those.
I guess, sometimes you don't see what you don't want to know.
Though, it sure mattered the next day at school. Wether you did what they all said you did, your opinion still didn't matter because once words were spoken, there was no going back.
I never saw what they said happened to Wonder Parker but she hid from eyesight the day after the party, her usual bubbly personality stiffened.
She had lost her virginity, a photo of her leaked. Wonder's naked tanned back exposed as her chest pressed into his chest, eyes closed as she slept peacefully.
Or so I had heard from two sophomore girls that had whispered the gossip to one another while walking down a busy hallway. I had never stopped to check my phone because sure enough, the message would be sent to me probably through one of teammates.
So, that was how Wonder Parker was named the largest Slut of the entire school. I didn't know her all too well, but it grew obvious more and more guys did.
Three weeks since the incident and my mind had moved on from her activity but she had caught the eye of many of my teammates since that time. Maybe that's why she turned up to Soccer Tryouts. The team was boys only so she was seemingly only coming to watch.
Running down the green field, power pumping through my legs and sweat dripping down my back, I passed the ball to the other forward who sprinted towards the goal. In and effort to dodge a defender he passed it back, the wet slosh of the field from the heavy rain the night before was my downfall.
Pulling my left leg back to shoot the goal, my right heal slipped from under me but as the within the fumbling momentum of my foot, it hit the ball, that flew past goal and hit a rather unfamiliar surface.
Landing square on my back, mug sinking into my season old soccer jersey and clinging to my blonde hair. I went to groan in pain but there was no air in my lungs. My nails dug into the grass as I stared wide eyed at the sky.
Breathe.
A hand stretched down to my collar and took a handful of my shirt to lift me off the ground with ease. The coaches hand gave me a rough pat, more like shove on the back as I spluttered for air, peering down to look at my face covered in specks of dark, grass filled mud.
His attention turned to Wonder who was hunched over, dark crimson blood cupped in her hands but dripped through her fingers and onto the grass.
"You hit her square in the nose." Alexander scoffed, looking at me with an unreadable smirk. His hands on his hips, mug drying up to his knee as he heaved for air himself.
My gaze turned from the red haired boy to girl who had a small circle of football players crowding around her. She muttered something that I was too far away to hear but as a black haired boy pointed at me, his jaw moving quickly, I knew she was wondering who pelted in the face with a ball.
Her eyes snapped to mine, a firer glaze that made me second guess going and apologising met my own.
I stared at her quietly, running a hand through my blonde, mud ridden hair, an action I did when feeling self conscious under the gaze of a lot of people.
"Go apologise." Alexander shoved my arm forward in an gesture to move, I shook my head vigorously but I needn't walk to her because her small bone frame was already storming towards me. Alexander walked away from me shrugging and small ironic whistle forming from his lips, "Good luck with that."
Looking at him tight lipped as he walked away causally, moments before I could ask him to stay his bulky frame was replaced by a fuming girl.
Switching my tight frame feature to a relax grin, "Hey..."
"Aren't you some soccer God?" Wonder's voice was directive and harsh took my confidence and dragged it to the pit of my stomach. She took the bloody cloth from her nose that made me grimace, "Isn't that you? Colin McKinin?"
"Er—" Looking at my teammates for help but my eyes flicking back hers at the irritated huffed, "Well, my name is Colin McKinin."
"Well," she mimicked my voice with a flare of overplayed stupidity surrounding the words, "Colin McKinin, how the hell do you miss that shot? And why did that damn ball hit me directly in the face?"
I scoffed, looking at the girl head to toe in effort to find where she stored all that sass, "You think I purposely hit you in the face?"
She poked me with force in the chest but to her annoyance the gesture didn't budge my stance, "You don't miss goals."
I raised an eyebrow as she pushed the cloth into her nose once more before smirking, "You watch me play?"
My confidence grew when her ears grew pink and her opened mouth closed quickly, the blood stained jaw expanded slightly as she clenched her teeth.
Wonder stood up straight and pushed her dead straight, coal coloured hair away from her face with confidence.
The coaches yells for me to tap off and start the game causes a ripple of strength as my chest expanded with pride. Maybe she sensed that because she gave me one last, 'I hate you' glance.
The corner of my lip twitched as she spun on her heel and walked off the field, leaving me with a stupid triumphant grin as I tapped the kick off.
People got to know Wonder Parker through many different ways. Some banged her, some met her when gossip threads came back to bite them in the ass.
And some accidentally fractured her nose and forgot to apologise.
