Never your best

It's been one year.
Now that you're gone
I think of you more often
Your presence on the planet
No longer needed in physical form

Your spirit must watch carefully
Those lives that you created
One locked away, far away
The other trapped inside
Where were you
When we needed you?
Why couldn't you show love?
What made you that way?

Your partner would have us believe
You were full of love and happiness
But in the end all we saw
Was your true self
There's no sense lying
We loved you
But you were never your best
