Left there in silence everyone remained frozen, with their eyes locked on Willow. But Willows eyes were locked on the spot where the bat last stood, her body shaking violently. Miles was frozen next to her, he suddenly turned and grabbed Willow in his arms and clutched her to him, but she stayed frozen trying to convince herself that she wasn’t the one they wanted.
A voice boomed over the speakers once the sun was up and things were safe again. The voice was loud and serious, “Outsider Willow, and loved ones please report to the central building.” The speakers clicked off and her stomach sank.
Miles pulled back and stared into her eyes, his expression so scared, and tears welling in his eyes. Out of the silence burst a scream “This is all your fault! You’re the reason they’re attacking us!” furry building on the boy’s face as he pushed his way to the front of the crowd to stand in front of Willow “My mother died last attack, and it was all because they wanted YOU!” In that moment the boy struck Willow across the face, Miles stood up punching the boy across the jaw, he fell back into the crowd, clutching his face.
Miles helped Willow up from the ground, a bruise blooming across her cheekbone. He walked her outside into the sunlight and said “you should probably be getting to central, before they come looking for you.”
“No, please Miles come with me they said loved ones too, and you and Darius are all I have.” A small sad smile formed on his face. He pulled her into a tight hug and she buried her face into his chest. She pulled away before she could start to cry and started walking towards whatever lays ahead.
When they arrived there were guards waiting outside, the guards stepped inside as Willow and Miles did then locked the front doors behind them. They were then escorted through the big building, down twisting hallways until they were standing in front of a pair of large double doors. They pushed the doors open, and inside Willow could see Darius sitting inside, elbows digging into his thighs and fingers laced through his hair. His head snapped up when she stepped into the room. He shot to his feet and rushed over to her and pulled her into a tight hug.
“I’m so sorry” he sobs “I couldn’t stop him.” Darius hugs her tighter, and then the man sitting behind the desk cleared his throat.
“Sorry to interrupt but I think that I should talk to Willow now, please come up here.” He motions her to come forward, and makes Miles and Darius remain at the back of the room by the guards. “As you know when you showed up here you were nothing but a child, but now you have grown to be an adult. So I think it’s time that you know what’s really going on.
“That night after we let you into the village the bats came in town, they wanted to find you, they wanted to take you with them.” Her eyes grew wide “I of coarse was not going to let those filthy creatures take an 8 year old girl to who knows where… They started to threaten my people as they never had before, I couldn’t stand by and see people get killed so I made a deal with them.
“The deal was that after you turned 18 you would be told of the deal, and then given a week to prepare for them to take you.”
Willow fell to her knees, eyes wide and body shaking. Behind her Miles exploded “You can’t do that to someone! She’s HUMAN just like the rest of us! You can’t just hand her to those wretched beasts!” When he started to move towards the Commander the guards grabbed his shoulders and forced him to his knees. But Darius looked the same as he had before, Miles turns to him “you knew didn’t you?” he says tears now streaking down his face. Miles jumps to his feet and walks to where Willow sits crying, he lifts her chin to force her to meet his eyes, then she falls into him, his arms now around her, as her tears stain his uniform.
“You may leave us now.” The commander says, and the guards exit the room gingerly closing the door behind them. “I know you may think of me as evil right now but I cannot just let you go.”
“Yes you can!” Miles blurts “Do you know what she’s been through, what those things have done to her life?”
The commander gives a fierce look towards Miles, making Miles stopped yelling “As I was saying, I cannot just let you go, you will have to escape. I will tell my men to do nothing different, they will patrol as they always have. And I am sorry to say that if you don’t get out of the city before the week is up I will be forced to hand you over to them. Now I suggest you all get home and start planning for her journey, whichever one she decides to take.”
The Commander turned around and starting staring out the window into his city as Willow, Miles, and Darius left the room. Miles looked furious, and Darius looked defeated, but Willow had determination in her eyes, a ferociousness that threatened to decimate anyone that got in her way.
