"Class please, settle down" I hear the teacher say. "I want to introduce Erica to you, she's going to be helping out in class and also helping some of you if your struggling"
I take a seat at the back of the class and take my diary and notebook out. The class starts, and I take down notes on the progress of the students. As I'm helping a boy with the project, I hear the teacher shout at one of the students.
"Matthew Espinosa why can you never get anything right? You're 16 but can't spell half of the words that you learned when you were little. How stupid are you? Do you want me to send you back to Grade One?!" She screams at a boy who stares sadly at his book.
I was shocked. I couldn't believe what I just heard. I don't think a teacher should say those things to a student. Shouldn't the teacher help him with his struggles instead of screaming her head off at him?
I try writing down stuff about the lesson but I just couldn't concentrate. I felt really bad for Matthew.
When the bell rang everyone started making their way out of the class "Matthew" I say just loud enough for him to hear me.
He turns around and looks at me "Yes?" He turns around, his eyes red from crying. "Look if you're going to call me stupid or some crap, save it. I've heard enough of it for one day."
"No, why would I say that? Can you just come with me for a second?" I say and we start making our way to the bench just outside the school gates.
"What happened today in class." I ask him. "Why was she screaming at you?"
"It doesn't really matter" he says, averting his attention to his shoes.
"Matthew I'm trying to help you, and in order for me to do that you have to tell me what happened" I say.
"Well... I'm dyslexic, I struggle in writing and reading, the teachers don't bother to help me. They're all right, I'm stupid."
His words struck me. "Matthew you're not stupid. Dyslexia isn't something you can help, it comes naturally, and it doesn't mean you're stupid."
He shrugs, "No one helps me though."
"Well that's why I'm here. If you want, everyday after school for an hour I could tutor you? Like help you with it and stuff." I offer him.
His face brightens. "You would do that?"
I nod and smile. "Of course, now let's get to know each other properly, I'm Erica, 17."
"I'm Matthew, but call me Matt, and I'm 16, turning 17 in a few months." He replies.
"I turned 17 a few days ago" I say to him.
"Well, happy belated birthday." he says. I chuckle. "Hey if you're 17, why aren't you at school?"
"I'm at this work experience thing, which lasts a few months." I reply.
"Cool, well thanks Erica, no ones ever offered to give up their time for me," He says, standing up and grabbing his rucksack.
"It's no problem at all, nice meeting you Matt, so do you want to start today?"
"Yeah sure, see you later"
"See you." I say, and watch his retreating back.
This should be fun.
