JonBenet Ramsey's murder is one, if not the most well-known and most-obsessed murder in modern history. Name sounds familiar, right? To learn about this murder, you need to look no further than the slew of Jonbenet programming in media for proof— 20 years (now 21) after her horrific death, shes still TV's primetime darling.
Last fall alone, at least five cable TV shows have presented there own investigation into the murder, including: "The Killing of Jonbenet: The Truth Uncovered", on A&E, "Who killed Jonbenet?" Investigation Discovery, "Jonbenet: An American murder mystery" even the Lifetime Movie, "Who Killed Jonbenet". Also, Dr Phil did a three part special where he interviewed Jonbenet's father and brother. Thats not even all of the documentaries! Decades after her body is found, shes still sparkling on the cover of nearly every magazine in America.
Not too many murdered children can stay the same, though. Even though one in five homicide victims are under the age of 19 and about 95,000 children are murdered worldwide every year, Jonbenet's case stands out among them all. Sad, but true.
There's something puzzling, something entirely unforgettable about the murder of Jonbenet that unlike the killings of other countless innocent children, we cant let go of. Its a shameless fascination we have, and its one we've chosen to project on her alone.
For some people, its because she belonged to a wealthy family. For others, its how how beautiful — and how blatantly sexualized — she was. For last enforcement and police/investigators, its how much her case was mishandled from the very day her body was found. For most of us, its a mix of all three. And therefore, would be an unfair amount of media attention surrounding one child.
